The Weight Loss Club (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.155

A warm, witty, gloriously realistic novel about living, loving and losing weight.

Set in a middle-class housing colony, this is the story of stay-at-home mum Monalisa, who cannot clean the kitchen counter enough times; Meera, who is bullied constantly by her traditional mother-in-law; college-going Abeer, who isnt sure how to impress the glamorous Mandy; academic Aparajita, who has no takers on the marriage mart; philosopher Ananda, whom no one takes seriously; and Treeza, a former school secretary now sunk in gloom. Into their midst arrives Oxford-returned Sandhya: half hippie, half saadhvi, full spiritual guru. Under her aegis is formed The Weight Loss Club, throwing the lives of our heroes and heroines into utter and delightful disarray.

But while chemistry brews and equations change, one question remains: who is Brahmacharini Sandhya, and why on earth has she moved into Nancy Housing Cooperative?

About the Author
Devapriya Roy has degrees in English literature and performance studies from Presidency College, Calcutta, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where she is pursuing a PhD on the Natyashastra (at least, that is what she says when asked what she does). Once upon a time, she was the Keo Karpin girl. Her first novel, The Vague Womans Handbook, was published in 2011. She is currently working on The Heat and Dust Project, the story of a quirky journey through India on an extreme budget, along with her husband, Saurav Jha.

Humane and Humorous

This book reminded me of Alexander McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street stories. It has that loving attention to people and places, the carefully interwoven relationships that characterize life in a housing colony as well as sufficient personal drama for each of its many characters to bring them to lasting life in the reader's imagination. Sometimes the stories go into deep, drawn-out detail as in the story behind Treeza Matthew's depression; other characters are more swiftly yet equally surely sketched -- a case in point being Molly who will be instantly identifiable to anybody who has studie... I liked the way the author described the joys and sorrows of the various women associated with the Nancy Housing Cooperative Weight Loss Club, but even more than that I was impressed by her insightful and non-sentimental depiction of the way the men reacted to the problems of the women in their lives.

This is a novel that is both humane and humorous and I would (and do) recommend it to anybody. Personally I object to the occasional spot of Indian English in the book but there is no denying that the deliberate use of such words plays an important role in the vivid atmosphere the author has clearly taken pains to create. Overall, this one's a keeper.

Humour and Philosphy.

How subtly the writer has conveyed such basic and supreme lessons of life. Each character portrayed is so much close to real life..they make u pause..think..and re look at your understanding of matters such as..life, success, marriage, parenthood, friendship etc. Humour is sucessfully in built. Enjoyed the book and loved it.

A very good and engaging read

totally awesome... very beautifully drafted story..

so many shades and a beautiful story written around them...
in initial few pages I felt its too many characters but then later all of them seemed as friends as i understood most of them because you presented them so well...

i read lots of new books, i mean current Indian book scene, but for a change somebody is just not writing about how they fell in love or something similar... and I am not trying to flatter...

and of course best thing i found was that mob idea that you brought in...

Heartwarming stories and Lively characters

"The Weight Loss club" is a delightful, enjoyable read that took me on an incredible journey into the Nancy Housing Society. The book is set in Kolkata and explores the lives of the residents of Nancy. Even though there are so many characters, Devapriya Roy does a beautiful job of weaving them so well that you understand the whole story. The characters are so alive and very likeable. It opened up so many memories for me. For instance, the part about the Momzillas who are seen outside the school gates not only had me in splits,it took me back to my school days. It opened up so many memories for me. For instance, the part about the Momzillas who are seen outside the school gates not only had me in splits,it took me back to my school days. Devapriya described it perfectly. My favourite character, though, would be Sandhya, the hippie saadhvi. Her attitude is so inspiring! Personally, I felt the closure on Meera's character was slightly hurried. I would have wanted her to be slightly more outspoken.
Overall, this book was hard to put down. I finished it in 4 hours flat! And after that, I felt like I was missing these people, like Anando Bose and Monalisa Das. Devapriya writes really really well. She has such a way with spinning heartwarming stories! I got addicted to Pure Magic biscuits because I could relate to Mil in "The Vague Women's Handbook " (Devapriya's first book) so well. So, while I am a little partial to TVWH, I would give TWLC a 7 on 10.

True, touching and beautiful

This second book by Devapriya has touched so many heartstrings...beautifully written with evocations of lost times, sensitive souls and cosmic meanings. She blends myth, memory and mystery with the subtlety of a dream, and her story flows back and forth in time with the ease and grace of air. Highly recommended.
