William Cowper - Poems

This volume of Cowper's poems, the publication of which is timely because 15th November 1931 sees the bicentenary of his birth, is something more than a volume of selections. Though it does not give us the translations, nor absolutely all of his original poetical writings, in Mr. Fausset's words, 'it may be safely said to contain almost everything which a lover, or even a student of Cowper's poems could desire.' Cowper was not only the author of John Gilpin: he was one of the finest landscape poets in English Literature, as we see in The Task, while his religious side is shown in the Olney Hymns and the poems Truth, Hope, and Charity, and his satirical vein in poems from Table Talk. With this volume of his Selected Letters and his translation of the Odyssey, now is provided a thoroughly representative collection of Cowper's works.
