Wise And Otherwise: A Salute To Life is a collection of short stories written by Sudha Murthy.
Summary Of The Book
Wise and Otherwise: A Salute to Life is a collection of around fifty short stories written by Sudha Murthy. These stories have all been derived from the author’s real experiences, gathered from her travels across the country while working with the Infosys Foundation.
Each story is just a few pages long and highlights a particular human trait, good or bad. The stories are varied and they involve personal encounters. Some of them are based on incidents that the author has observed from a distance.
As she has travelled extensively, these stories are not just confined to one geographical region, but cover a large part of India. But even as the culture and languages vary, the basic human nature that these stories are focused on remains the same. The stories reflect all the facets of human nature, from the very good to the very meanest acts of selfishness.
The stories are many and varied. One of the stories revolves around a man who leaves his own father in an old age home, claiming that the old man is a total stranger to him - a homeless man that he wanted to help. Then there is the story of a woman who does not forget to express gratitude for a help she has received, even as she lies dying.
There are stories that just act as a witness to society, like the discussions between two marriage brokers regarding the impact the IT sector’s growth has had on their business, a beggar who moves into an area devastated by an earthquake to take advantage of the aid provided to victims.
There are light and inspiring stories, like the one about a friend of the author’s, whose perception of life changes for the better when she sees a beggar dancing in the rain.
The book paints a portrait of people from across the country. From tribal regions to tiny hamlets to the fast-paced and ever-changing cities, Sudha Murthy touches every facet of the country, and all types of people.

Before , i begin with the review , i would like to add a few things about Mrs Sudha Murthy. She is a trustee, and chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Which works for the betterment of the less fortunate people .She has been doing this work for many years , without expecting any reward for herself but as her duty and responsibility . She has provided financial help to those who can afford to spend money on education or on food or on cloths without expecting anything in return...We need more people like Sudha Murthy to make India a better place to live in....
Talking about her book "WISE AND OTHERWISE" there are no words that i can think of to praise her book...but i can certainly say that it will definitely make you think about those who are not as blessed as most us are reading this review. It will give you an opportunity to know more about the "real India". And most importantly this book is based on her personal experiences and not fiction. There are so many instances in the book which make your heart ache....I recommend this book for each and every Indian who wants to know more about the real state of India...
i really enjoyed the reading of this book. The author has expressed all his emotions in clear and fanatic way. She is taking with her to all her past journeys and experiences. The vivid description of all her experiences has make the reading enjoyable as well as conveys some lessons. I was very much pleased while reading this book.
The book 'Wise and Otherwise' contains many short stories which are of maximum 6 pages each. Actually, they are not stories, but real life experiences of Sudha Murthy when she visited different places and met different people in her life. Mostly, all stories are around emphasizing the importance of moral values and about people's behavior in different circumstances. For novel readers, it may not sound like a very interesting book, but for people who like reading non-fiction, close to reality stories, this will be the best option. I feel, title is also apt and funny.
I picked this book on an impulse and I was expecting it to be a light read - The book is more than just a good read! These aren't short stories per se, but real life experiences that have enriched her life. The language is lucid yet striking. Every incident carries a message and it also shows the other side of individuals. The book brings forth the fact that each one of us should contribute to the society; contributions need not be in millions, but a little help will surely go a long way.
Hats off to Sudha Murthy for helping the underprivileged.
