Witches (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.214

The Witches, written by Roald Dahl, is a story involving a boy and his grandmother, and the witches of the world.

Summary Of The Book

The Witches follows the adventures of a 7 year old boy, who was recently orphaned. He’s sent to stay with his grandmother in Norway, who tells him stories, in an attempt to heal his pain. One of the stories she tells him is about details the Witches and their malicious deeds against children. The grandmother also teaches the boy about the ways he can identify the Witches, their behaviour with each other. She also talks about the dreaded Grand High Witch.

When the boy and his grandmother return to England, to continue his education, the boy has his first encounter with a real witch, which leaves him shaken. The grandmother, in order to make the boy more wary of the Witches, tells him more about them. In due course, she tells the boy about the Grand High Witch and the money machine she uses, which can print the currency of any country in the world.

The boy and his grandmother later go for a holiday to Bournemouth, where they discover the meeting of the “Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children”. However, all is not as it seems, and the boy will need to think fast before the Witches get a hold of him.

The Witches, one of Dahl’s most well known books, was first published in 1983. The Witches was adapted into a movie in 1990, which ends differently from the book.

About Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl, born in Wales in 1916, was of Norwegian origin and was counted amongst the best storytellers for children in the world.

Roald Dahl also wrote Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James And The Giant Peach, George's Marvellous Medicine, and The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar And Six More.

Dahl’s writing, particularly in his stories for children, is known for having a fixed theme. The protagonists of his stories were often children who suffered abuse at the hands of an adult and found support in a ‘good’ adult. His stories have often been criticised for excessive violence and their dark humour.

Dahl worked for Shell Corporation in the 1930s, and is well remembered for having been an ace in the Royal Air Force. While in the RAF, Dahl rose to the rank of Wing Commander and was also involved in espionage, during the Second World War. He was married twice and had 5 children. Dahl died in 1990 in Oxford, at the age of 74.
