Flipkart Official Review

16th century England is not England without The Tudors. That is for sure. We are all aware of the fact. Of Henry VIII and his six queens and perhaps what happened to each of them. The famous way to remember what happened to them is: “Divorced Beheaded Died. Divorced Beheaded Survived”. This is the best way to remember what happened to each of them.

Hilary Mantel’s magnum opus though – is a trilogy not of Henry VIII but one of the people in his counsel – Thomas Cromwell and how he grew in the King’s court. The book begins in 1500 and ends in 1535. It is all about Cromwell and how he rose to become Cardinal Wolsey’s right-hand man, and how he oversaw the King’s divorce to Catherine of Aragon. Mantel takes into account everything ever said and written about Cromwell and gives us her well-researched and highly entertaining version. A read not to be missed. Also, do check out the sequel to this one: Bring Up the Bodies.

Wolf Hall is an award winning historical novel set in the period between 1500 and 1535. It is a fictionalised biography detailing Thomas Cromwell's ruthless rise to power in King Henry VIII’s court.

Summary Of The Book

Wolf Hall takes the reader to England of the 1520s, when it is was on the brink of a political crisis. A threat of civil war looms in case the king dies without a successor. At the same time, Henry VIII wishes to annul his 20 year old marriage and marry Anne Boleyn. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, entrusted with the onerous task of securing the king's divorce, which is vehemently opposed by the Pope and most of Europe. The difficult circumstances that he finds himself in destroy him completely.

Taking advantage of the uncertain atmosphere comes in Thomas Cromwell, a blacksmith’s son, Wolsey's beloved patron and a political genius who would do just about anything to quench his thirst for power. The loss of his family and the downfall of Wolsey prepares him to break all the rules and manipulate everything that comes in his way of shaping England as per his own and Henry's wishes. His reforms are carried out against the parliament, the Pope, the entire political establishment and under a king who swings between moments of amorous passions and brutal anger.

Wolf Hall is the winner of the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction in the year 2009. In the following year, it won the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction. In 2012, BBC decided to adapt it for BBC Two.

Classic and very gripping

I'd borrowed a new copy of this book from one my my former classmates. I knew a little of Thomas Cromwell before as I'd read the book titled 'Dissolution' by C.J. Sansom. I was very captivated by Cromwell and so borrowed the book. I finished reading the book in about three days; I just couldn't let myself to put down the book for an instant!! I'd always thought of Cromwell as the bad guy. But after reading Wolf Hall, I love him more than ever^^
I have placed an order for a Violin book here in flipkart.com. If everything goes well with it, who knows? I might just gather some courage, spill my savings and buy Wolf Hall! Kudos to Hilary Mantel. Even if you aren't interested in fiction or classics, it doesn't really matter, I guess.
The plot, even though it might be complicated for few, is quite simple according to me--takes you along its flow :))
A definite 'must read'. You will surely not waste your time when reading Wolf Hall^^

TRUELY A WOLF AMONG SHEEP!!!

It is very, very rarely seen in literature that a book comes out which entirely, suffiently and efficiently describes or attributes to its genre. WOLF HALL is such a work, such a book which contributes to its genre convincingly. WOLF HALL is like a WOLF howling among SHEEP.
The book has an interesting and appealing storyline. It has a vast and convincing cast of characters painted vibrantly on a ginormous canvas by HILARY MANTEL. The pace is steady and moving and always makes the reader hang on to every word and waiting for the next climax with anticipation. The background is vivid and engaging and is very much changing. The discriptions, similies, metaphors and the situations presented in this book are immaculate and interesting.
All in all the book has all the ingridients required in a international bestseller in high magnitudes. The end is not a cliff-hanger but it also gives birth to a desire to read the other two books in the TUDOR TRILOGY or the CROMWELL TRILOGY as fast as possible. Although the no. of pages - 653 to be exact - may kill some of your enthusiasm, but if you buy it you will not be disappointed... :))

Not Just Another Tom-Tom.

Plot:It describes an England of 16th century and the politics being played out between church, kings and Queens. The King wants to remarry but is being refused permission by Church. The plot is very beautifully , also the power struggles are well portrayed. There is definitely a lot of characters and plenty of them named "Tom" to spin your head.

Comment:But its a thick book and i would recommend a non stop read coz i tried to continue from the point where i had stopped after i had a couple of days break and i couldn't recall all the characters.
I would say you will like this book unless you don't like historical fiction genre itself.

Interesting read

An interesting insight into a period of Henry's reign, covering the period when he broke from the Roman Catholic Church. It covers the story of Thomas Cromwell - his rise from obscurity to a position where the highest noblemen in the land sought his favour, and the way he served the king, while furthering his own interests.
Quite a compleX book.
