Words Of Freedom: Ideas Of A Nation (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs. 91

Words Of Freedom: Ideas Of A Nation by B. R. Ambedkar is an anthology of writings and speeches given by the famous Indian leader.

Summary Of The Book

In Words Of Freedom: Ideas Of A Nation, readers will have an opportunity to read and understand some of the revolutionary ideas that were responsible for developing the Republic of India. This book showcases some of Ambedkar’s writings and orations which were given at critical periods during India’s struggle for Independence. Ambedkar was a principal player in the formation of the Indian Constitution. He was born in the Dalit caste and as a result faced enormous impediments in his youth, and during his adult life. Nevertheless, he was the first individual from his community to attain multiple doctorates, and become a prominent political figure.

Ambedkar was a prolific writer and orator. Words of Freedom: Ideas Of A Nation features four selections, 3 speeches and 1 essay, from Ambedkar’s works. These are titled If Democracy Dies, It Will Be Our Doom, The Communal Question And The Framing Of The Indian Constitution, I Have Loyalty To Our People And Also To The Country, and The Indian Ghetto. In these selections, readers will have an opportunity to witness Ambedkar’s convictions about issues which were close to his heart. Some of his concerns were the protection and position of the Dalit caste in the new republic of India, attaining proportional representation in government services and in the constituent assembly, and democracy’s survival.

Words Of Freedom: Ideas Of A Nation was originally published in 2010.

About B. R. Ambedkar

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a politician, jurist, historian, economist, and philosopher, who fought against immense social and cultural discrimination in order to play a key role in the forming of India’s Constitution. During his lifetime, Ambedkar had written several prominent pieces of literature. Some of these titles were The Annihilation of Caste, Essays On Untouchables and Untouchability, The Buddha and His Dhamma, and The Evolution Of Provincial Finance in British India.

Ambedkar obtained an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Bombay University. Then he attended Columbia University where he obtained an MA. Upon returning to India, he briefly served as the Military Secretary in Baroda. Ambedkar then attempted to teach, tutor, set up his own consulting business, all of which met with failure due to his “untouchable caste”. He then began work as a legal professional which was met with resounding success. Politically, Ambedkar founded the Independent Labour Party. He also played a prominent role in the drafting of the Indian Constitution, not to mention the creation of the Reserve Bank of India. Ambedkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1990. Ambedkar had been married twice. First to Ramabai and then to Dr. Sharada Kabir. He passed away in 1956 from complications related to diabetes.
