Wuthering Heights is a masterpiece of classic English literature, which narrates the repercussions faced by some classes of people because of the growing jealousy and vengeful attitude prevalent amongst mankind.
Summary Of The Book
When Mr. Lockwood from the south of England rents Thrushcross Grange, a manor house, he meets Heathcliff. Heathcliff is the landlord and a wealthy man living in a farmhouse called Wuthering Heights. After certain incidents, Lockwood is curious regarding the strangeness of the farmhouse and asks Nelly Dean, his housekeeper, to tell him its story.
The written collections by Lockwood in his diary, based on Nelly’s childhood tale, is what forms the main part in Wuthering Heights. As a young girl, Nelly recalls working at the farmhouse when it was owned by Mr. Earnshaw and his family. Mr. Earnshaw adopts an orphan boy, whom he names Heathcliff. He is subjected to cruelty by Earnshaw’s son, Hindley, but is loved by his daughter Catherine.
The story revolves around the hatred Heathcliff has for Hindley and the different ways he tries to take revenge. It also shows his melancholic heartbreak, due to his love for Catherine, who grows up to marry Edgar, which complicates her relationship with Heathcliff. Wuthering Heights is a paragon of Bronte’s imagination and was considered to be pretty dark for that time.
Bronte wrote Wuthering Heights between October 1845 and June 1846, after which she passed away. It was edited and published in the year 1850 by her sister, Charlotte, after Emily’s death. This truly timeless novel describes the emotions of envy and revenge. Bronte takes her readers on a painful ride of intense love and spiteful hatred, with her sophisticated observation and artistic prose.
Wuthering Heights is a highly regarded novel, but was not received well by the audience when it was published. It had mixed reviews because of its downright mental cruelty, and was said to be a strange novel expressed in a raw fashion. This novel has attracted a lot of critical acclaim and has been adapted into various forms like films, musicals, ballets, radio and television dramatizations.
