How Will You Measure Your Life? is a book that guides the readers into living a happy life, telling them that they need to be content with what they have.

    Summary Of The Book

How Will You Measure Your Life? came into being a result of Christensen’s article in the Harvard Business Review, which was based on his lecture to students graduating from Harvard Business School. Christensen would have normally spoken on innovation, however, this time, he dealt with a very simple, yet profound subject, which would not only benefit the students in their career, but also their personal lives.

Christensen began to speak on the subject of personal happiness and fulfillment. He gave this speech during a difficult phase in his life, when he suffered from a stroke and heart attack, followed by being diagnosed with the type of cancer that killed his father. These events made him look back in his life and tell the young graduates about his experiences, guiding them into ways to live a fulfilled life. He throws light on a number of events in business to explain simple life lessons, such as the downfall of Blockbuster due to negligence in changing their strategy. He tells the readers that the reason behind many businesses’ failure is that the owners are only concerned with the profits they make, not the needs of their customer.

He also makes use of other business stories to tell the readers that they shouldn’t make a decision by marginal thinking without considering the whole picture. Christensen also attempts to deal with the subject of choosing a career option that will produce satisfaction. He also offers practical advice to those who are confused whether their personal relationships will be a source of happiness in the future. He also guides the readers into maintaining their integrity in tough times and staying away from jail.

    A must read!

The book will not give any direct answers (no book can) to the question raised, but it will surely enable you to reflect, set your own standards for success (not just in professional but also personal life) and then work towards it.

The author makes a very important point that it is very easy to give full attention to our careers and ignore personal relationships because our careers provide instant rewards (appraisals, promotions); but time & efforts put in personal relationships (especially...

    Excellent Read!

This is an excellent book that highlights how business principles are equally applicable to personal lives.

Without sounding preachy and going overboard, the book points out the key factors that brings success to personal lives. From marriage to child rearing and development, what makes them one achieve success is put forth here.

The book does not have any mantra or tips, it makes the reader reflect and introspect.

Must read for anyone just out of college and entering the professional world.

Its not just another self-help book

I must admit, I was surprised by the book. My initial judgement was that it will be a self help book but its far more than that. The book has many theories about how to apply business research to your personal life.

The book is in 2 parts, while the first part deals with the professional life and Clay's theories with many examples to deal with different situations. The second part shows you how to be successful in your personal life with parents, friends, wife, children..

    The book is an int...
