Summary Of The Book
Jake Epping, the protagonist, is a 35 year old English teacher who teaches high school students at Lisbon Falls in Maine. In one of his evening classes, Jake is deeply moved by an essay written by one of his students, Harry Dunning. Harry Dunning, a janitor, recounts how in 1958, his alcoholic father killed his family and injured Harry.
After teaching the adults of the GED class, Jake meets Al Templeton, the owner of a local diner. Al reveals to Jake that his storeroom can take him back to the year 1958, and to the day John. F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. He wants Jake to prevent the assassination.
Jake begins his new life under the alias George Amberson. He travels back in time to the world in which JFK is still alive. He comes across known people with different pasts, and decides to change a few other things along the way. He tries his best to stop Lee Harvey Oswald from killing the President. He also tries to change events that would affect Harry’s future.
George settles in a small town called Jodie in Dallas, where he works as an English teacher. He and Sadie Dunhill, the librarian, become romantically involved. Will Sadie discover his true past? Is it really possible to change the past? Will Sadie and Jake be able to save the President? Would the world have been different if Kennedy wasn’t assassinated?
Published in 2011, 11.22.63 received much critical acclaim. This bestseller received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the Best Mystery/Thriller category in 2011. It also won the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Novel in 2012.
