    Description

31, a corporate thriller, was a nominee for the ‘Tata First Book Award’. It has been receiving rave reviews for its contemporary subject of restructuring and layoffs and it’s unique narrative style, with one chapter for each of the 31 days in the month of March. This crackling page-turner reveals the ruthlessly cut-throat world of the banking industry, but also its humour, quirks and strange camaraderie.

It is the story of Ravi Shastry, a regional head at Imperial, a multinational Bank. The month of March starts off on a positive note and he seems set for a promotion to the Head Office in Mumbai or possibly even an international assignment.

However the next 31 days will change his life forever…

The collapse in Imperial’s Brazilian subsidiary triggers an upheaval within the bank as thousands are laid off across the globe. A restructuring is advocated in the Indian operations and to make matters worse, it becomes clear that a firing list will be released on 31st March which could cull a large portion of the Indian employee base.

In such a state of cataclysm, battle lines are drawn, bizarre alliances of convenience are formed and conspiracies are hatched as employees struggle to ensure their name is not on the dreaded list. Ravi sees his friendships dissolving, his help lines disappearing and his reputation withering. He finds himself in a quagmire of deceit, lies and subterfuge.

In a perverted twist of fate, his wife Savitha discovers that her job is also on the line! A series of personal and financial debacles amidst social ignominy pushes Ravi to the verge of insanity.

He has been a stellar performer and a fast riser. This is unchartered territory that challenges his principles and demands political acumen.

Will he find himself compromising his principles to emerge victorious?

Will he keep his family together by 31st March?

Will he have a job on 31st March?

    Modern Times

Modern Times, a great movie by Charlie Chaplin, was witty with an undercurrent of sorrow and desperation in the life of an industrial worker. Upendra Namburi has presented the life of a modern corporate official in similar vein. There is an underlying all pervasive presence of wit while the characters are going through absolute desperation and tumults in life.

The protagonist Ravi Shastry is neither Tolstoy’s Levin nor Maugham’s Philip Carey, he is a character described in various shades of...

    Yeh Dil Maange More

"31" is like a engrossing cricket match....like the World Cup Final, 2011. One is always on their edge of their seats waiting for the next run, boundary, wicket etc. And when the moment comes you dont want it to get over....that in essence for me is the story of "31". It clearly is book to be read in one sitting.....else Ravi Shastry & Co. dont allow you a peaceful snooze. The book also leaves itself open for yet another engrossing sequel.

Upen...its not a hint, I hope the message is loud an...

Slow Start but a Pacy End

The plot of this book interested me the most and I went for it. I was really impressed by the front cover of the book. Very innovative.

The story is very clear right from the beginning. The writing is simple. The idea of having the story told one a day and time basis was neat, yet the story didn't seem to require it. But it did give clarity.

The plot is very weak at the beginning. There are so many characters and it becomes very difficult to remember which person works in which department,...

    Average read

Long story short - 31 does not stay in your mind for a long time.
Its a story about the month of march and how it affects the people of banks in this month.
Yes its descriptive but its unable to hold on to my attention.
Difficult read at times because of the slowness the plot.

I wont suggest this one to any good reader.

    Nice Read

31 has all the ingredients of a 'corporate thriller'. The Author book is set over a period of 31 days of March, a month that spells appraisals, bonuses and employee reviews.
It is not just the story of Ravi Shastry but of a manager who is constantly trying to manage his boss’ manipulative behaviour, targets, deadlines and his personal life.
The author, Upendra Namburi, shows how a professional's everyday life pretty much revolves around a Blackberry. Can't wait for his next book to come out!

Whenever you read 14 consecutive thrillers and fictions in two months’ span, believe me, you cannot read more without a well-deserved break. For some, this break could mean catching up on lost movies or seasons; or what I’d like to call “A Reader’s Block”. But to me, a break means changing the genre and pick up something less gory, something subtle and pleasing. I came across “31: A Thriller” at a book...

    Awesome!!

31 is a fast paced & gripping novel which keeps you at the edge of your seat right till the end!! Any corporate employee will identify with the protagonist as the plot twists & turns through a web of deceit & corporate intrigue. The plot is taut & keeps you wondering what’s next!! At times the suspense is so much that you really have to hold yourself back from going straight to the last chapter !!
Mr. Namburi has written a best seller!! Thoroughly enjoyed reading it... Eagerly awaiting your...
