Description

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons In Personal Change focuses on seven traits that a person must develop in order to be successful and happy. These include not just personality traits, but also the person’s deeper character traits.

Summary Of The Book

Stephen R. Covey was working on his doctoral thesis in the course of which he reviewed self-help literature of the past 200 years. This was in the 1970s. He found that while self-help books from the 1920s onwards began to stress on personality traits, the older books all laid emphasis on character development.

Covey says that there has to be a balance between the two. While the twentieth century books began to focus more on achieving success in life and concentrated on personality ethics, Covey says character development is more fundamental.

He says that personality ethics has to be built upon a solid foundation of character ethics. This includes values like integrity, courage, a sense of justice and honesty. The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons In Personal Change calls the elements that make up Character Ethic primary traits, while it defines Personality Ethic elements as secondary traits

The book then discusses seven habits that a person must cultivate in order to live a more fulfilling life. It takes the readers through three stages of character development, dependence, independence and interdependence.

The first stage is the state that a person is born in, as a child is necessarily dependent on others to fulfil its needs. Independence comes later as the child grows and learns to take care of itself. The third stage is interdependence, when a person learns to live with others, in a cooperative manner. The first three habits mark the progress from dependence to independence. These include being proactive and have the ability to plan and prioritize their activities to achieve their goals.

The next three traits are about interdependence. Human beings are social animals, so they must learn to live and work effectively with each other. So, these three habits stress the importance of seeking mutually beneficial relationships, to learn empathy, and to integrate different ideas and approaches by working as a team.

The seventh habit is Sharpen the Saw, that is renewal. It is concerned with rejuvenating one’s energy and internal resources through techniques like prayer, yoga, meditation, reading good books and so on.

This book was included in Time magazine’s list of The 25 Most Influential Business Management Books.

Timeless principles

President Bill Clinton wanted to integrate this book's principles in the white house. The top leaders of multi-billion dollar organizations (whose very work is to make money and drive change) have been recommending this book. Do you think they are fools?

Some flipkarters here are "advising" about "not wasting your money" and that this book is "not worth your time". Do you think these people are highly intelligent?

Take some time and decide for yourself whether you want to buy this book or...

Over hyped book......

To begin with, it speaks about habits which are common sense, one would have learnt in their life. And secondly, he iterates same things again and again throughout the books making us feel that we have screwed up our lives and he is the only savior who can bring us back in form.!

There is only one habit of highly successful people, and that is that they DON'T waste their time reading self-help nonsense. If you want to read something to better yourself, read educational information that will ...

A good book.

I bought this book as I was looking for some answers about my habits, mentality and priorities in life. I had a lot of expectations from this book and I thought that it will change the way in which I think. But itâ??s not something that can help a person. Just that its structured and shows a way to handle life in a better way.

This book is a good read and does give a lot of options and ways to manage the life and relationships. Like getting ready with the end in mind and listen to the other...

One of the best books I have ever read!!!!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The fact that it talks about character development and not personality development is the strongest point and will only be understood by people who would accept that they are not there where they want to be in life.

It talks about how not to use tricks and means to influence people for personal gain. It is about building your character!!!

Practice what it says and it will transform you into a better human being!!

Change your paradigm

I don't know why, but I used to have a great bias against this book, thinking it was one of the many shallow-self-help books. But after reading a couple of good reviews from other authors I admire, I decided to read it, and I'm glad I did.
The central advice I get from the book is that being effective is not matter of techniques but of being better oneself through acquiring the 7 habits he suggests. He illustrates and explains quite well his ideas.
Warning: it is not light reading and require...
