Summary of the Book

In a land where summers are a decade-long interlude between winters which last a lifetime, there is a cold lesson that the weather teaches mankind. Winter is coming. The Seven Kingdoms have known some manner of peace for the last few years. The Iron Throne was wrested from the tyrannical Targaryens by Robert Baratheon and Eddard “Ned” Stark. Robert went on to become the King of the Andals and the First Men. Now fattened from the years of peace, Robert satisfies himself with an occasional hunt. After the Hand of the King dies, Robert journeys North, to name Ned Stark the successor. Ned welcomes this title only begrudgingly, for he knows that it comes with unwelcome responsibilities. And there are few men with as much pride and honour as Ned Stark. He struggles to bridge the differences between his children and the children of Robert, but he soon makes an alarming discovery. Robert’s son Joffrey might be a bastard child, and the threat of the Targaryens still lingers, albeit in the form of a young girl married to the chief of a barbaric horde.
