  • Description

A Suitable Boy is a novel by Vikram Seth, which is set in a newly post-independence, post-partition India. It offers satirical and earnest examinations, by turns, of social and political issues during the period.

    Summary of the Book

The book is divided into 19 parts with each part focusing on a different subplot, and the story revolves around four families over a period of 18 months. Mrs. Rupa Mehra's attempts to get her younger daughter, Lata, wedded to a "suitable boy" is the central plot. Lata, a 19-year-old student doesn’t want to be controlled by her mother or her arrogant brother, Arun. She is forced to make a choice between her suitors: Kabir, Haresh, and Amit, for marriage. The book also depicts several national issues of the time, including the Hindu-Muslim dispute, the status of lower caste population like the jatav, land reforms leading to the decline in the power of the feudal princes and landlords, academic affairs, eradication of the Zamindari system, and family relationships.

A Suitable Book from A Suitable Shop

Its a masterpiece. Set in the post-independence, post-partition era in India, the novel follows the story of four intertwined families over a period of 18 months as a mother searches for a suitable groom for her daughter. It takes us into a splendidly imagined world of highly extended multi-cultured families and creates for us an accurate and compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves.
The story is so superbly engrossing, each character is so completely developed and believable, tha...

    A good read

I had heard a lot about A suitable Boy, so had high expectations. But the book was more than good, but not excellent. Since I migrated from Hindi to english only a couple of years back, I found english to be quite easy. Though when ever writer is giving adjective to a person, I had to refer to dictionary. The story is of 1950's. So it was a treat to know, how the times and society were then. Various facts of History we only heard, but never seen, you could see them shaping up. For 2/3rd of th...
