The second film in the series of adaptations of detective novels by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Abar Byomkesh is directed by National Award winning director Anjan Dutta. Set in the lush green locales of North Bengal, this drama brings to life the novel - Chitrachor.
Set in the 1960’s decade, the film begins with Byomkesh (Abir Chatterjee), accompanied by his wife Satyabati (Ushasie Chakraborty) and dear friend Ajit (Saswata Chatterjee), visiting Dooars to recuperate from prolonged illness. However, the holiday-spirit doesn’t last long as the tranquillity of the place is broken by a theft followed by a murder. What appeared to be an open-and-shut-case of burglary, leads Byomkesh into a maze of questions, unravelling which lets the sleuth to discovering some unpleasant truths.
With a fitting background score by Neel Dutt to enliven the gravity of the plot, Abar Byomkesh showcases an era of changing societal ethics in Bengal. The film focuses on the complexities of the human mind and treats relationship-blues with mature precision, a signature of the director.
