  • Description

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is commonly named among the Great American Novels. It is the story of a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old boy called Huckleberry Finn. The book vibrantly depicts the places and people alongside the Mississippi river.

    Summary of the Book

Huckleberry Finn has troubles fitting in with the society. He is called Huck by his friends, including his best buddy, Tom Sawyer. Huck’s father is a drunk. Widow Douglas takes care of Huck, teaching him religion and civilized behaviour. But Huck ventures out on several adventures. Twain brings out his best satire on racism and other deep-rooted attitudes of people in this work. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a must-read for ardent Mark Twain fans. This edition is introduced by Darren Shan, and is published as a part of Puffin Classics.

    • MARK TWAIN, was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens who was born in Florida on November 30, 1835. When he was four, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, a small town on the river Mississippi where he continued to live till he was eighteen. Mark Twain's formal education ended soon after his father's death in 1847, when he became a printer's apprentice, working for a time on the Mississippi Courier. From 1853,he travelled widely across the United States. As a result of a steamboat journey down the river, he met Horace Bixby, the captain of the boat, and turned to a career on the river. After training for one and a half years, he became a licensed pilot in 1859.He left the Mississippi at the outbreak of the American Civil War, and became in quick succession, an army volunteer, a gold prospector, a timber speculator and a journalist. While working on the newspaper, Enterprise in Virginia, he adopted the pseudonym, Mark Twain, which in a riverman's language of the Mississippi meant two fathoms, or twelve feet. From journalism, it was a short step to becoming a full time author and his first book, Jumping Frog appeared in 1865. Twain combined his writing with public lecturing and foreign travelling, becoming an American ambassador at large, and acquired an international reputation as a humorist-cum-frontier philosopher or a very earthy man who has seen the ups-and-downs of life. Twain wrote about his personal experiences and the things he knew from first-hand experience.
