    Description

Akbar and Birbal by Amita Sarin showcases some of the classic, thought-provoking tales of wit, friendship and wisdom between the Mughal Emperor Akbar and his courtier, Birbal.

    Summary Of The Book

Akbar And Birbal is a book that describes the friendship between Akbar, the Mughal Emperor, and his advisor Birbal. The book contains a series of educational and moral-deriving tales between the two. Birbal’s judicious and wise approach to any problem led Akbar to seek his counsel whenever a crisis or dilemma surfaced, ranging from personal to official.

The book commences with a basic and succinct introduction to Akbar, Birbal, and the Mughal Empire, thereafter progressing to the riveting stories of the pair that have been passed down through generations. According to the book, Akbar and Birbal first met through a chance encounter in the forest and thereafter developed a strong rapport. Akbar seeks Birbal’s advice on almost all matters, from clarifying the domestic troubles of his subjects, his own personal predicaments to all matters related to justice and crime.

One of the stories revolves around an elderly lady who has had a bag of gold stolen from her, and details the manner in which Birbal concocts a shrewd plan to help catch the culprit. Another story is about a thief who steals Akbar’s royal seal and proves to have a few surprises and tricks up his sleeve. Throughout the book, the witty banter exchanged between Akbar and Birbal in each story provides for an absorbing read.

All the hard work done by the author in researching the Mughal Empire is reflected in the brisk verses of the book. Amita Sarin brings to life, in the mind’s eye, the intricacies and grandiosity of the Mughal court through her remarkable penmanship. Moreover, key historical facts have been artfully interspersed with these amusing stories, providing a great educational aspect to the book.
