Born on 30th April 1941, in Bannu (NWFP), now in Pakistan, Ranjit Kumar Narula, migrated to India with his family at the time of partition in 1947. Eldest of three siblings, he qualified to join the prestigious National Defence Academy in Khadakvasla Pune, whilst in his teens and got commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a transport pilot in May 1962. During the next twenty-five years he led an exemplary record while serving the nation in areas wide and far and operations varied from one another. On the personal front, Ranjit was an excellent family man, fulfilling all his duties as son, brother, a wonderful husband to Rajni, whom he married in 1968, and a perfect father to their two daughters Anu and Aparna. Throughout his life, Ranjit possessed many interests ranging from photography to travelling, a passion for cooking and a keen ear for music. Sentimental at heart, his love for poetry remained an integral part of his life right till the end.
