  • Description
Much in common with Franz Fanon’s classic,The Wretched of the Earth.' ~ Susie Tharu, Economic and Political Weekly 'In Kancha Ilaiah’s conceptual universe, you feel the pain of life. In his ideas, you sense the vulnerability of battling unpredicatable waters . . . you also sense the gaiety of robust combat and the fun in the fight.' ~ Sagarika Ghose, Outlook Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd writes with passionate anger, laced with sarcasm on the caste system and Indian society. He looks at the socio-economic and cultural differences between the Dalitbahujans and Hindus in the contexts of childhood, family life, market relations, power relations, gods and goddesses, death and, not least, Hindutva. Synthesizing many of the ideas of bahujans, he presents their vision of a more just society. In this revised edition, he presents an Afterword that discusses the history of this book, often seen as the manifesto of the downtrodden Dalitbahujans. He talks of its reviews as well as of the abuse he has received from its detractors. He reminds us of the need of an ongoing dialogue. As he says, ‘My request to Brahmins, Baniya and Neo-Kshatriyas [upper class Sudras] is this; you learnt only what to teach others: the Dalit bahujans. Now in your own interest and in the interest of this great country you must learn to listen and to

Overall a good book but superficial in parts

This is a great book, which every Hindu and other Indian should read to introspect on the various evils and outdated counterproductive aspects of Hindu society. But in his commentary on the Mahabharata, the author has gone completely haywire with an extremely superficial and shallow analysis. He has no appreciation that the Mahabharata is an epic poem. His portrayal of the conflict between the Pandavas and Kauravas as that between Brahminical and non Brahminical forces is laughable, since all...

Want to know something true?........Don't bother about this book

Naming a book along the lines of a work done by Bertrand Russell(Why I am not a Christian is Russell's famous work) doesn't make it a definitive work.

Any person having a basic knowledge, let alone strong knowledge, regarding Hindu Scriptures will surely find the heights of foolishness in the work.

For example, the "genius" author claiming to show off his knowledge of Ramayana, declares that the Ramayana is about the story of defeat of Karna at the hands of Katama Raja. What Karna of the Ma...

    Propaganda

This book is nothing but propaganda. Yes, there has been a certain history of discrimination, but this naive view of the Indian people and Dharmic thought is outright misrepresentation of the facts.
The truth, in fact, is that on a policy level, there is a total reverse discrimination against the so-called high castes. This is resulting in the unhealthy promotion of incompetence. Please read the history written by unbiased authors, as you know how things are exaggerated by those who have 'su...
