The award winning Marathi novel, Anandi Gopal, was written by the distinguished novelist S. J. Joshi (1915-1989), who lived and worked in Pune, the hub of the Brahmin orthodoxy that is depicted with pitiless insight in his writings. A prolific writer, he is the author of several collections of short stories, novels and literary essays. The translator, Asha Damle, was born and educated in Bombay, graduating from Elphinstone College in 1943. She has taught English to Asian children and has also taught at the Dormers Wells School for fifteen years. She has written two collections of short stories in Marathi.
