Anarkalis : everyone’s favourite!

You would agree that Anarkali suits is a section of Indian clothing that is most likely never to go out of style. But do you know where and how it originated? Well, this garment has a long, long history! Its origin dates all the way back to the Mughal era during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Legendary courtesan Anarkali who had pioneered the dance form of Mujra is who the garment is named after. Anarkali wore flattering kurtis – tightly fitted at the bodice and elboartely flared around the hip. Needless to mention, her appearance became an instant attraction in the court of Akbar, and her name now lives on in the form of this gorgeous outfit!

Anarkalis take over the fashion scene

India's fashion scene first got a whiff of this outfit when actor Madhubala wore it in Mughal-a-Azam, in the cult song - Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya. There was no looking back after that! Many Bollywood stars and prominent personalities began to swear by it and so did their fan following! The outfit found countless admirers all over the country and became a raging hit instantly. And why won't it? No other garment looked as royal as an Anarkali dresses . In case one did not wish to take on the cumbersome task of wearing a saree in an event of a wedding or a reception, this outfit is the right replacement! It could appear simple at first glance, but the flattering fit and fall of it overshadows its simplicity. Teamed with big jhumkas, a matching pair of churidars, and embellished heels, you can hardly ever go wrong in styling this garment!

Anarkali dresses is for all body types!

Yes, we love how this piece of clothing flatters every body figure! It accentuates the top half of the body since it is fitted at the bust, followed by large pleats and frills flowing around the hip and waist area (which is a common problematic area we hear from women). Anarkalis now go by the name ‘Empire Waist’.

Types of Anarkalis

Over the years, designers have experimented with this garment keeping in mind the likes and dislikes of the modern Indian woman. Asymmetrical Anarkali dresses, floor-length Anarkalis, jacket-style Anarkali suits, multi-layer Anarkalis, frock-style Anarkali gowns, Pakistani Anarkalis , A-line Anarkali kurtis, party-wear Anarkali dresses – there is something for every age group and body type out there, which is why we are rooting for it so strongly!

Heavy or breezy : choose your pick!

Anarkali kurtis make a great base for embellishments – in the form of bead and stone work, sequin embroidery, zari, lace hemlines, elaborate borders, heavy and intricate necklines, decorated bust – there is an Anarkali suit for every occasion, we assure you. You will find Anarkalis for day to day and office use as well. These are generally made from modest cotton fabric with the use of block print, kalamkari print, floral motifs, to name a few. These are great for informal occasions and everyday use. Light and breezy, it is perfect to beat the heat in the summer as well!

How to style Anarkalis?

a.) Churidars suit Anarkalis to the T, no doubt. But how about wearing this piece with a pair of palazzos? This makes for a great Indo-western look! It’s a different take on Anarkalis and we love it! How about pairing it with a skirt ? This gives a beautiful, voluminous look and is sure to make you the center of attention!

b.) Sometimes, this outfit looks great without dupattas too! Instead, you can go for a statement neckpiece and a maang tika. If you are wearing a deep neck Anarkali, a necklace is a must! A studded collar necklace or a choker looks great with low cut Anarkalis or the ones with a plain yoke. Don’t go overboard on the jewellery though. One or two statement pieces is fine!

c.) Heels, heels and heels! This garment cannot be worn without heels, especially the festive ones. Anarkali gowns are long, so you do not want their hemlines to be sweeping the floor! The shape of this outfit is best accentuated with height, so do not compromise on heels! You can always wear wedges or block heels if you’re afraid of the pencil ones!

d.) If you are conscious about your weight, choose darker colours. Darker shades give the illusion of a slender frame and are very flattering! There are a range of stunning dark shades to choose from. Bottle green, maroon, wine, ink blue, deep purple - these suit Indian skin tones beautifully! So don’t be afraid to experiment.

e.) Turn your ethnic game stronger - choose a contrast coloured waistcoat to go with the ensemble! This is a great choice if your Anarkali is a lightly designed one.

f.) If you are wearing a very long Anarkali gown , ditch the bottom wear altogether! Since they are floor length, there really is no need of churidars or pallazos. Don’t forget to wear those heels though!

g.) If your Anarkali is simple to look at, you could carry a heavy Zardosi dupatta around your neck. But make sure the dupatta is in a contrast colour! There are multiple ways to drape a dupatta. If you want to show off the pattern on your kurta, wear your dupatta sideways. If your kurta is plain, cover your chest with it! It’s as simple as that!

h.) If you are on the heavier side, make sure you choose delicate, small prints or embroidery. The work should be thin and not imposing. Larger prints will make you appear heavier that what you’d wish! Big motifs should always be avoided.

i.) A simple, white Anarkali looks gorgeous with silver Jhumkis or Chandbalis! Add a couple of silver bangles and you’re all set! Silver with white is such a timeless combination!
