Author Info
Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American writer. She wrote numerous commercially successful novels that promoted individualism and laissez-faire capitalism. Her works were popular among generations of young people in the US from the mid-20th century. Night of January 16th (originally titled Penthouse Legend), a paean to individualism in the form of a courtroom drama, was Rand’s first successful play. Her first published novel, We the Living, was a romantic tragedy in which Soviet totalitarianism epitomized the inherent evils of collectivism. Anthem, a subsequent novella, portrayed a future collectivist dystopia in which the concept of the self and even the word ‘I’ have been lost. After more than seven years, she wrote her first major work, The Fountainhead which is the story of a handsome architectural genius Howard Roark. Roark’s individualism and integrity are evinced in his principled dedication to his own happiness.
