Summary of the Book

King Shahriyar’s ravenous lust was legendary. Each night he sleeps with a different virgin to satiate his lust, only to have her executed the next day. After three years of this insane rapine, he sets his eyes on his court vizier’s daughter, the beautiful and intelligent Shahrazad. Shahrazad goes to him as ordered, but before he can lay his hands on her, she begins telling him a story. Intrigued, Shahriyar listens to her, keeping his lust at bay. He doesn’t realize the hours pass and soon, the sun rises without him laying a finger on her. Shahrazad stops her story half-way, leaving Shahriyar to think about it throughout the day. Later that night , Shahrazad has only one thing on his mind. He wants to know how the story ends. Shahrazad completes her story, only to begin a new one. Thus, for 1001 nights, she keeps Shahrazad away from her, substituting his destructive desire with a curiosity for stories. This collection includes the first volume of those stories. These stories have enchanted children and adults throughout the centuries, and they will continue to do so.

About the Translators

Malcolm and Ursula Lyons are specialists in Arabic literature. Malcolm is an accomplished academic and a part time Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge. Ursula is an Emeritus Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge.
