Summary of the Book

Enzo narrates the story of his human family from his perspective, sharing the disasters and achievements of Denny and his wife and child. The novel is a testament to a man′s life, given by his dog, and is also a testament to the dog himself. Although Enzo cannot speak, he comprehends everything as he witnesses his master′s ordeal. His natural silence only enhances his listening ability and helps him understand many of life′s subtle nuances most humans don’t. With wit, keen observation, and a gutsy heart, Enzo guides the reader to the nostalgic yet fulfilling conclusion: there are no boundaries to what we can accomplish, if we truly know what we want and where we want to be. Ultimately, in spite of what he sees as his own confines as a dog, Enzo comes through courageously to preserve the Swift family.

About Garth Stein

Garth Stein is an American author and film producer. He is the author of Raven Stole the Moon and How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets, which won him the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award in 2006. He has also written a play called Brother Jones, which received its first production in Los Angeles in 2005, and was hailed as "brimming with intensity" by L.A. Weekly. After completing his B.A. degree from the Columbia College, and his M.F.A. degree in film from the Columbia University School of the Arts, Stein worked as a documentary filmmaker for about eight years. He also directed, produced or co-produced many award-winning films during the time.
