Melanocytes are skin cells which produce the pigment melanin responsible for the skin’s color. Brown spots are due to an increase in the number of melanocytes and the overproduction of melanin. Exposure to sunlight stimulates the process of pigmentation and causes tanning. In certain cases the pigmentation process is disturbed and zones of brown spots appear.
