Nursing and Breast Feeding

You had been preparing all this while for the arrival of your baby, did the shopping, made your home baby proof and much much more to welcome the little one into this beautiful world. Now that the little one has finally arrived you could feel a whole range of emotions – from complete exhaustion to total elation. And if this is your first baby, your mind would be a total turmoil about how would you be nursing and breastfeeding her, taking care of her in the best possible manner, and more.

Don't worry, it is quite natural to feel anxious, especially when you have your first kid. Trust me, even my wife and I have been through this anxiety stage. We had our baby delivered at home and even though there were people around, managing a baby is never a blanket solution that fits all. However, with time and practice, nursing our daughter became easy.

As a father, I would definitely never experience what they say - the joys of motherhood, however, I am definitely enjoying spending time with my little one. Nevertheless, when I look back in time, all the confusion, anxiety and not knowing how to handle a hungry kid, made us read enough to ensure we could handle our daughter in the right way. Here are two important things that we as a couple learnt and understood.

Getting Started
I am assuming most of you would be availing the birthing services of a hospital. You are in good hands. Once your baby pops out, try breastfeeding in the hospital as soon as you can. The attending nurse or lactation consultant would be able to guide you better on how to position your baby in the right manner. You would wonder later how your little one latches on to your nipple like a pro as if she had been practicing it all the while!

The reason I said you would wonder later, is that you might not be able to admire the beauty of action due to the painful latch. Yes, don’t let the soft gummy mouth of your baby fool you, for they compensate for the missing teeth.

Now that you are more worried, let me assure you, you’ll get used to the pain. Also if your baby does not latch in properly in spite of a number of trials, don’t get discouraged, with the guidance of the hospital staff and of course, trial and error, both you and your baby will find a comfortable way to breastfeed.

How and When to Breastfeed
Believe me when I say that if a baby is awake and not cocooing, she is hungry! Ideally, you should try to latch her onto you every two hours or each time she cries! Directions will not feature in your little one’s strength-list, so you would have to nudge or direct her to get him to turn toward the breast. This is just to train them to understand where their food comes from. After a day or two, they would automatically find their way to your breast without any guidance. In the initial stages, you might have enough milk to feed at one stretch, don’t panic. You can consult your doctor for medication. However, please note, this differs from person to person.

Breastfeeding Products and Nursing Supplies
The market is flooded with numerous products that aid in breastfeeding. A few of the essential products are breastfeeding pillows, nursing pads, breast pumps, breast milk storage bags, breast cushion pillows and more.

Nursing and breastfeeding are indeed difficult in the beginning, however with time and practice both you and your little one would get a hang of it. Nursing-breastfeeding your baby will also help develop a bond that thrives on love and care.
