A great book!!!

Dr Atul Gawande is a gifted writer, and author of various books and articles. His most famous article "Cost Conundrum" was published in New Yorker magazine, and explained reasons behind high Medicare costs in US.

In this book, Dr Atul has touched upon a very important topic - Medi-care in Old age, and in terminal illness. He discusses how in many cases of terminal illness, medicine may be able to buy more time for the patient but may in turn decrease his quality of life, and how the last pa...

Being Mortal

The fact that a book questioning the veracity of some established treatment methods for terminally ill, elderly care (esp. in U.S) by a doctor himself makes it unique.Throughout the book Dr.Gwande, shares his opinion on the proper care need for the people in the wee hours of their life,he reiterates that treatment to those should be very calculative and should improve their qualities of life, for they have a limited time left.He opines that doctors must put the priorities of the patient before...

A Must Read

I fist of all would like to thank the author Dr Atul for writing such an insightful book. I look at my elders now in an entirely different light. I hope someday, this book is published in Hindi as well, so that a wide audience can easily read it.

It prepared me to understand what to do, for my parents, and plan for my old age as well. My parents are doctors, not only i gifted them this book, which they loved, i gave this book to many of my doctor uncles and aunts, and other relatives such a...

Being Mortal:the wonder and the terror of existence.Active Euthanasia should become top priority for pressure groups.

Dr Gawande is an accomplished writer;his earlier books like Better,Complications and Checklist Manifesto have proved it.In "Being Mortal",he has shown the courage to discuss the touchy subject;aging, fraility, suffering, the limits of medicine and dying, subjects which are not taught in medical schools. The new concepts that have enabled the well being of the aged are "assisted living" as opposed to "old age homes" and palliative care and even assisted death for the terminally ill in countries li...

An American view becoming relevant in India

Being a surgeon myself, the book is an excellent read. My impression has always been that just as our side view mirrors remind us that the objects appearing in the mirror are closer than they appear, our deaths are closer than what we imagine.
One must discuss the end of life needs with close relatives since at the time of the end, we may not be capable of taking any rational decisions. Now, in India also, many people end up in ICU for dying. And even if a death occurs, I am bombarded with wh...
