Big Miracle: Three Trapped Whales, One Small Town, A Big-Hearted Story Of Hope is a non-fiction account of an animal rescue effort that brought the world together.
Summary Of The Book
Big Miracle: Three Trapped Whales, One Small Town, A Big-Hearted Story Of Hope is a story that captured the attention of the media, United States of America, and the Soviet Union for a brief period, as they launched a combined rescue attempt to save gray whales.
In October 1988, an Inuit hunter found three gray whales trapped in a hole in the ice in the frozen Arctic. The location of the trapped whales was near Barrow, a remote Alaskan outpost.
A local television network filmed the plight of the three trapped whales. It is viewed as a moving and an inspiring sight at the same time. The two older, adolescent whales were constantly working to keep an air hole open and help the young baby whale that was with them.
When the program was aired, it soon got the attention of the whole country, and reporters and media crew descended on the little town. While the media frenzy was built up and local businesses tried to make the most of this unexpected influx of tourists, the plight of the whales became the focus of one person.
Cindy Lowry was a Greenpeace activist and she started an all out effort to save the whales. The media attention helped, and a huge rescue effort was launched, bringing together the US government and the Kremlin, and their combined military power.
Big Miracle: Three Trapped Whales, One Small Town, A Big-Hearted Story Of Hope portrays how this event brought together the political leaders of both countries, and united the oil companies and environmental activists. Two businessmen from Minnesota arranged for de-icing machines, while the Soviet military brought in an enormous ice-breaker ship to clear a path for the whales.
The freeing of these animals turned out to be one of the biggest media events of the time as the rescue unfolded on television screens across the world. The book has been used as the basis for a major feature film starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski.
