    Description
About the Book: Biomedical Spectroscopy is the output of the intensive discussions of the authors and the medical professionals of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University. The ?Centre for Laser Spectroscopy?, a centre for developing biomedical applications of laser spectroscopic methods, was established at Manipal University in 1997. The scientists of the Centre, together with the physicians, surgeons, and pathologists of the KMC, initiated a number of research programs in this area. The main aim of the Centre was to develop spectroscopic methods for early detection, screening, monitoring therapy and identification of disease markers, with special emphasis on various cancers, so that these techniques can be applied for routine healthcare applications. Outcome of these research activities are covered in the book. A common platform of information can provide a more open communication enabling faster and better evolution of the spectroscopic methods for biomedical applications. An attempt has been made to meet the needs of academicians and healthcare professional qualitatively, rather than theoretically. The purpose was not only to provide a common language for both of them to interact, but also to serve as a starting point for students and researchers who may like to embark in the rapidly advancing field of Biomedical Spectroscopy and applications of spectroscopic techniques in advanced medical technology. To facilitate this, we have tried to include a large number of references of current original research in the area of Biomedical Spectroscopy. This will enthuse many scientists and medical professionals to work together in this emerging field, so that medical technologies, which may not be affordable today, can be made routinely available in a highly cost effective manner. About the Authors: Dr V Bhaskaran Kartha (MSc, PhD) retired as Scientific Officer and Head of Spectroscopy Division at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Bombay. He was a Visiting Scientist at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg SWEDEN, NIST in Washington DC, MIT, Cambridge, Boston and the Head and Senior Scientist, Centre for Laser Spectroscopy, Manipal University. He is a recipient of several recognitions and awards from Professional bodies of Chemical and Physical Sciences and Indian Academies viz., Rangadhama Rao Memorial Lecture ? Indian National Science Academy, S C Sirkar Memorial Lecture ? Indian Association for Cultivation of Science, Life Time Achievement Award ? Indian Society of Radiation and Photochemical Sciences, Nandlal Singh Memorial Lecture ? Laser and Spectroscopy Society of India and Sathyanandan Memorial Lecture ? Cochin University of Science and Technology. His areas of interest include Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, Spectrochemical Analysis, Synchrotron Radiation Spectroscopy and Biomedical Applications of Optical Spectroscopy. Dr Kartha is a Fellow of the Laser and Spectroscopy Society of India, The Indian National Science Academy and The Indian Academy of Sciences. Dr Santhosh Chidangil (MSc, PhD ? BHU) worked as Research Associate at Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Assistant Professor at Academy of Medical Sciences, Kerala and Assistant Professor at Centre for Laser Spectroscopy, then MAHE (now Manipal University). Currently he is Professor and Head of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics at Manipal University. For the past 10 years he has been involved on biomedical application of lasers and ultra-trace analysis. His areas of research include Micro Raman Spectroscopy of live cells and their interaction with drugs and nanoparticles, interaction of ultra-short pulses with biological macromolecules, proteomics and protein profiling of physiological samples for the early detection and staging of diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases. He was an Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical physics (AICTP) in Trieste, Italy and is a member of Indian Lasers Association, Indian Physics Association, Indian Nuclear Society and SPIE.
