Ruskin Bond - A Writer for All Seasons

“The world keeps on changing, but there is always something, somewhere, that remains the same.” - Ruskin Bond

They say change is the only constant, but the only thing that perhaps remains the same is our childhood memories. Memories of an imaginary friend, of a mystery land, of adventures of a lifetime, and true bonds with kind souls - this is what Ruskin Bond books offer to young readers. His books have the breeze of the mountains, the simplicity of living in small towns, the complicacies of human emotions, and some wonderful characters that stay with the readers for a really long time. If you are an ardent reader, then there is a high probability that you know who Rusty and Uncle Ken are. They are two of the many beloved characters found in Ruskin Bond’s books that are available online. If you haven’t yet explored the world of Ruskin Bond through his books, or you want to gift books to a young reader, then buy Ruskin Bond’s books online.

Ruskin Bond and His Body of Work

“No, we don't become writers in schools of creative writing. We become writers before we learn to write. The rest is simply learning how to put it all together.” - Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond’s writing style is simple, and his books paint pictures that are can be related to easily. Ruskin Bond’s books reflect his personal Anglo-Indian experiences as well as the changing social, cultural, and political aspects of India. His extensive body of works includes fiction, short stories, novellas, autobiographical works, non-fiction, romance, and of course, children’s literature. Ruskin Bond books list has literary gems, such as The Cherry Tree, Roads to Mussoorie, The Blue Umbrella, The Room on the Roof, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, Delhi Is Not Far, Angry River, Crazy Times with Uncle Ken, Rusty Runs Away, and so on.

Taking us through the myriad landscapes of the Himalayas through relatable characters are Ruskin Bond’s stories. It’s time to travel and take a trip down memory lane when you start reading Ruskin Bond books again. You don’t have to head to any bookstores anymore, as you can buy Ruskin Bond books online from your favourite shopping site. From knowing about his childhood to understanding his literary techniques, here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about your favourite author.

1. The Lone Fox Dancing in Dehradun

Born to Edith Clarke and Aubrey Alexander, Ruskin Bond spent his initial childhood in Kasauli. After he turned six, he along with his mother and sister, went to live in his maternal home which is situated in Dehradun. He was sent to a boarding school in Mussoorie. He has spent a few years in London as well, where he started writing his first novel, The Room on the Roof. He has received several accolades that include the prestigious Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Sahitya Akademi Award.

2. Literary Style and Devices Used

While one might immediately think of relatability as a consistent factor in his works, there are several other things that are evident in a work by Ruskin Bond. Most of his works are set in the foothills of Himalayas. A possible reason for the same could be the influences he has had as a child growing up in Shimla. The Angry River was his first work that was specifically aimed at children. With The Blue Umbrella, Ruskin Bond became a prominent author for children’s literature. With a literary career spanning over 50 years, Ruskin Bond has experimented in various genres that include thrillers and horror stories as well. He has also tried out various forms of writing which include fiction, short stories, and novels. Some of his works also have an autobiographical element to them.

3. Influences of Ruskin Bond Stories in Cinema

Even if you haven’t read many of his works, you must have seen glimpses of his stories in mainstream cinema and television. Many of his noted works have been made into popular movies in Hindi. The Blue Umbrella, one of his most prominent works, has been made into a movie by Vishal Bhardwaj. This adaption also won the national award of that year for the Best Children’s Film. Vishal Bharadwaj has also adapted Susanna’s Seven Husbands into a movie. This particular adaptation had Priyanka Chopra essaying the role of a woman who was married to seven men at various stages of her life.  The 1978 film, ‘Junoon’ is also based on one of Ruskin Bond’s novel A Flight of Pigeons.

4. Relatable Characters

Even if Ruskin Bond’s stories are set in an imaginative town or universe, you can’t deny the fact that every character of his is somehow relatable in many manners. The relatability factor could either be based on the behaviour or it could also be the background from which the character has evolved and grown up in. If one had to pick a consistent character that has recurred in many of Ruskin Bond’s notable works, it would probably be Rusty. Rusty is a 16-year old Anglo-Indian character who has appeared in notable works such as The Room on the Roof, Rusty Comes Home, Rusty Goes to London, and Vagrants in the Valley (which is a sequel to The Room on the Roof).

Ruskin Bond: The Storyteller from the Hills

Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent who lives in Landour near Mussoorie in Uttarakhand. His contribution to Indian literature is unparalleled and his books have played an important part in the growth of many young readers. Ruskin Bond’s contribution has been recognised by the Government of India, and in the year 2014, he was awarded the third-highest civilian award in the country, the Padma Bhushan. He was born in the year 1934 in Kasauli, and he spent his childhood in Jamnagar, Shimla, and Dehradun. Ruskin Bond wrote his first novel when he was 17, and much of his literary work is inspired by life in small and serene hill stations that are by the foothills of the Himalayas.

Stories Beyond Books

“A story never really ends and happiness is something that comes and goes. It is as rare as a rainbow.” - Ruskin Bond
