1. The Lone Fox Dancing in Dehradun

Born to Edith Clarke and Aubrey Alexander, Ruskin Bond spent his initial childhood in Kasauli. After he turned six, he along with his mother and sister, went to live in his maternal home which is situated in Dehradun. He was sent to a boarding school in Mussoorie. He has spent a few years in London as well, where he started writing his first novel, The Room on the Roof. He has received several accolades that include the prestigious Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Sahitya Akademi Award.

2. Literary Style and Devices Used

While one might immediately think of relatability as a consistent factor in his works, there are several other things that are evident in a work by Ruskin Bond. Most of his works are set in the foothills of Himalayas. A possible reason for the same could be the influences he has had as a child growing up in Shimla. The Angry River was his first work that was specifically aimed at children. With The Blue Umbrella, Ruskin Bond became a prominent author for children’s literature. With a literary career spanning over 50 years, Ruskin Bond has experimented in various genres that include thrillers and horror stories as well. He has also tried out various forms of writing which include fiction, short stories, and novels. Some of his works also have an autobiographical element to them.

3. Influences of Ruskin Bond Stories in Cinema

Even if you haven’t read many of his works, you must have seen glimpses of his stories in mainstream cinema and television. Many of his noted works have been made into popular movies in Hindi. The Blue Umbrella, one of his most prominent works, has been made into a movie by Vishal Bhardwaj. This adaption also won the national award of that year for the Best Children’s Film. Vishal Bharadwaj has also adapted Susanna’s Seven Husbands into a movie. This particular adaptation had Priyanka Chopra essaying the role of a woman who was married to seven men at various stages of her life.  The 1978 film, ‘Junoon’ is also based on one of Ruskin Bond’s novel A Flight of Pigeons.

4. Relatable Characters

Even if Ruskin Bond’s stories are set in an imaginative town or universe, you can’t deny the fact that every character of his is somehow relatable in many manners. The relatability factor could either be based on the behaviour or it could also be the background from which the character has evolved and grown up in. If one had to pick a consistent character that has recurred in many of Ruskin Bond’s notable works, it would probably be Rusty. Rusty is a 16-year old Anglo-Indian character who has appeared in notable works such as The Room on the Roof, Rusty Comes Home, Rusty Goes to London, and Vagrants in the Valley (which is a sequel to The Room on the Roof).

Ruskin Bond wrote his first novel when he was 17, and much of his literary work is inspired by life in small and serene hill stations that are by the foothills of the Himalayas.
