The EOS 5D Mark III is part of the world famous EOS range of high performance DSLR cameras from Canon. Housing a 36 x 24 mm full frame CMOS image sensor, this 5D is capable of capturing high quality images at an incredible 22.3 megapixel resolution. The advent of Canon's state-of-the-art DIGIC 5 image processing technology makes it possible to capture extremely clear high resolution images, while also being capable of recording full HD videos at 1920 x 1080 resolution. The Canon 5D Mark III also supports 3:2 aspect ratio.
Body
The lightweight components along with a robust body design of the EOS 5D Mark III is aimed at providing easy-handling, for more extensive and repeated use. The EOS 5D Mark III camera body weighs 860 g, and the rough and rugged texture of the camera not only adds to the aesthetic value of this DSLR camera, but also helps the user maintain a firm grip during operating.
Sporting a large eye-level pentaprism viewfinder for an expansive field of view, the 5D Mark III features a sizable 3.2 inch TFT colour LCD display with a 1,040,000 dot resolution. The Canon EOS DSLR supports Compact Flash Card Type I, UDMA Mode 7-compatible, SD, SDHC or SDXC memory cards. Powered by an LP-E6 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the Canon 5D Mark III is capable of shooting up to 950 shots using the viewfinder and up to 200 shots in the case of live view shooting which continuously uses the camera’s LCD screen.
Performance
The Canon EF lens mount on the 5D Mark III makes it compatible with all Canon EF lenses with the exception of EF-S lenses. The auto focus system on the 5D Mark III works on the TTL secondary image registration and phase detection. The number of available auto focus points depends on the lens being used.
The ISO light sensitivity on this Canon EOS 5D, ranges from ISO 100 to 25600, further expandable to a staggering ISO 102400, giving it the ability to consistently capture sharp and clear images even under varying lighting conditions. This DSLR also has an operational shutter speed ranging from a maximum of 1/8000 sec to a minimum of 30 sec. As the Canon EOS 5D Mark III does not feature a built-in flash, it provides a provision for an external flash attachment.
Features & Connectivity
The PictBridge functionality on the EOS 5D allows the camera to connect directly to a printer without a PC and readily print the selected images. The DSLR also employs the Dust reduction feature, which helps to remove dust from the camera’s sensor and ultimately maintaining the spec free clarity of the captured image. The various shooting modes that are available on the Canon EOS 5D include Auto+, Program AE, Shutter Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE, Manual and 3 levels of customised settings for quick and instant operation of the DSLR.
The Face Detection function automatically detects faces within the frame and optimizes the focus and exposure to capture them with maximum clarity. The self-timer feature offers a delay of 2 or 10 seconds, giving the photographer enough time to get in front of the camera and be part of the image.
The Continuous Shooting mode on this Canon DSLR is capable of up to 6 shots per second and is saved in the JPEG, RAW or JPEG + RAW formats. The EOS 5D Mark III records full HD videos in the MOV, MP4 and H.264 file formats. The captured images and videos can be transferred to a PC or a laptop using the camera’s high-speed USB 2.0 connection. The HDMI connectivity lets you connect directly to a HDTV so you can view all the recorded files with superior clarity.
