    J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults – The Casual Vacancy - is a story of a town called Pagford that becomes a town at war plagued with class, politics and other social issues after the death of Barry Fairbrother, the beloved Parish Councillor.

    Summary of the book

Pagford is an English paradise to an outsider, with a market square and an ancient abbey where the revered Parish Councillor Barry resides in. The pleasant disguise of the town soon unveils the social, political conflicts along with an anxious election that involves deceit, unpredictable revelations - all for the successor seat left by Fairbrother. The book is adapted into a BBC television series and is yet to be released. The Casual Vacancy also became the 15th best-selling book of 2012 in the first week of its release.

    good & bad

well... lets face it. The only reason I'll pick up a 700 page drama on the backdrop of a council election in a dreamy English hamlet is because its written by her. and so i did.
I started the book with no biases and no expectations however, and was prepared to treat it as what it was.
I must say, the book was not disappointing.I loved the way she develops the characters, builds up the plot and slowly plunges into the story. She follows it up with some steamy suspense and drama and finishes wi...

    Getting Serious from Sirius

Well we must admit its time J K Rowling expand her horizons than be gloriously branded as a one-time-hit with her over the roof successful HP franchise. The Casual Vacancy not just exposes to us the nuances of Pagford, but of Rowling herself. Its not J K Rowling's fault if Pagford is least entertaining and sweet compared to Hogwarts, but ours.
Its better we grow ourselves up from the incredibly pleasant magical world of witches and wizards to the shockingly brutal and raw muggleworld while r...

    Just. Great.

The fact that there wasn't a speck of Rowling's style in the dark-humored literary volume dearly anticipated by many, suggests one of having done an exceptional job at being an author. And to know that the fiction itself didn't disappoint; being put mildly, I absolutely adored every instance, character, scene and the final outcome gathered. Hats off to you, Jo.

My first badge of gratitude: our dear Flipkart. I received my order ON the date of release, which was more than I'd dared to expe...

    Heart-Wrenching

If you are buying this book considering the author and her previous works, I suggest you think again. This book is not for the weak-hearted and the sensitive. Will dissolve you onto tears and I am not saying it like it is a good thing.

The penmanship is excellent and the content is thought-provoking. But the Casual Vacancy's universe the exact opposite, in every way, to what Rowling created at Hogwarts: painfully real, but not very optimistic.

    About Struggles of Muggles

Do not buy this if you are a HarryPotter fan. Buy this only if you are a Rowling fan. If you love her writing style and the depth of her characters, this is the book for you. But there is not a trace of magic, but like HP, it affects you and tugs at your heart strings. Not recommended for a light read.

    A Good REad

PEople like me who grew up reading HP and loving Rowling's each and every word are now well into adulthood thereby proving a pretty strong reading base to this novel. It is for matured readers only as there are many appalling happenings and vile characters.Once again Rowling proves that she is good at showcasing the various emotions of - a widow,a wife,a GP,a teenager,an OCD,drug addict, estranged lovers and what not.The novel is slow upuntil the last hundred pages.Till then I didnt get a clue...

    Again a masterpiece from Rowling

J K Rowling did a great job with The Casual Vacancy. It is pretty good for a change from the well-known Harry Potter series. The storyline is perfect though I find unnecessary details at places.but on the whole ,a really good job from the successful author.

    Not the expected style.

I was a very big fan of potter series, so in the same way I have expected this book.
But this book is much more about drug abuse, sex, adultery etc. I never thought that JK could also write such type of novels. Frankly I was surprised to see such story. But one thing I liked in the book is that she developed each character slowly and done a good job. We also find some twists which we don't expect, that makes the novel a little interesting. In the end I think its an 'ok', if u ask me how was t...

No wands or spells but the Magic of J K Rowling, The Writer is everywhere...!!!

I remember when JKR declared "Casual vacancy" most of the people I knew(some of them didn't even read a book of hers) said: "But why does she wanna write more, she has 7 best sellers"!!! and I was like "Why not? She is such a brilliant story-teller"!!!

So when I got "The Casual Vacancy" in my hands, I prepared in my mind not to EXPECT anything... no magic, wands or spells
and as I started reading, i was back in that familiar turf... Her Writing!
Pagford is so much opposite to Harry's infinite...
