Chasing The Monsoon: A Modern Pilgrimage Through India Abridged ed Edition is a compelling travelogue by Alexander Frater that takes the reader on an astonishing journey of India in pursuit of its beautiful summer monsoon.

    Summary Of The Book

Alexander Frater’s Chasing The Monsoon: A Modern Pilgrimage Through India Abridged Edition is a travelogue wherein the author relates his two-month’s journey through India. Frater is anxious to follow monsoon and observe its impact on the surroundings. He follows his dreams and pursues his goal while traveling through India.

With his sole aim to pursue monsoon, this adventurous author travels from Bangkok, Thai-Malaysian border, Rangoon, to Akyab in Burma. He loves to follow the monsoon, at times staying behind it and at times staying ahead of it. His adventures form a fascinating narrative filled with exotic experiences of an ambitious and charmingly romantic traveler.

Frater begins his journey in India in 1987 to witness the most astonishing meteorological event,  the Indian monsoon. He chases the summer monsoon from the burst of India near the southernmost tip of Trivandrum, through Calcutta, Delhi, and to a remote hill town located on the Bangladeshi border. In Chasing The Monsoon: A Modern Pilgrimage Through India Abridged Edition, Frater exposes that the Indian summer monsoon envelops the country by 20th May with two arms, one from the west and the other from the east, and these get united around the 10th of July over central India.

He explores the impact of the extraordinary phenomenon of the Indian summer monsoon and in Chasing The Monsoon: A Modern Pilgrimage Through India Abridged Edition captures the immense effect of nature over Indian people’s lives and culture.

    Phenomenon

The book describes the writers two separate (or is it three?) journeys through India, following the onset of monsoon, terminating at Cherapunji. Although not in the class of Orwell or Rushdie, using a bit of imagination, a reader can actually travel with the writer across rain soaked landscapes, filling the lung with the earthy fragrance of soil after a downpour.

An exciting look at India through a different lens

a very interesting read. The author follows the monsoon as it spreads across India. He focuses on how the monsoon changes the color, mood, of the land as it arrives. He also does touch upon the India bureaucracy he needs to tackle to visit Cherranpnji.
