Besi Bhaal ase!

I see some `mainland' guys running down this amazing narrative, or more accurately, a train of honest thoughts. They have obviously missed the bus and tractor and sundry else. Perhaps I like the book because it talks about me. Maybe I double like it because Kishalay is a school buddy. But hey! I envy this Bengali guy who wrote what anyone of us could have...especially me! The balls this guy has to open his mental fly and post sense. He talks and speaks for a whole generation brought up in vag...

A layered narrative that is handled well.

Kishalay Bhattacharjee has been reporting and writing about the "North East" for a long time now. In fact, it is a construct of the media that the individual states get homogenized into this "North East" and, this is another reason that the sharp definition and understanding of the region is lacking in the mainstream. This book is a good place to piece together an understanding - a sensitive narrative that builds on his repeated journeys and involvement in a variety of stories.

The neat bit...

an honest and humble account of the North East especially Manipur; a good read

Haven't finished reading it yet, almost half through. It's a good detailed book regarding the culture and the happenings in Manipur one would not find in other books. The cuisines, sports, street of Paona Bazar to name a few and in the perspective of the author is something worth mentioning. But this book is not for everyone for sure. Those who don't even know where is Manipur won't be interested to look further let alone its culture and its people. For instance, those readers new to Manipur ...

A journey to Northeast through Che in Paona Bazaar.

Writer has unfolded many unknown stories and incidences about Assam and Manipur. It was like everything is happening in front of you . He has used his skills to narrate serious issues through a tale and made the book more interesting to read.

Remarkable and fascinating stories- a very necessary book on the region.

The idea of this book seems to have come from author's journalistic tours and travels into distant corners of the North east and stories that often his colleagues in media don't report because they are just not ‘important’. Writing and representing the people and the place in a way which steps aside from the image of the guitar strumming or bomb exploding stereotype is real and takes on various notions about the region and its people heads on.

I especially enjoyed learning about politics of ...

vague representation of actual lives

When you write a book with only your perception without clear justification it tends to give a vague understanding of the actual lives of the people. The story being told through Eshei hardly covers 10% of the entire population. The writer talks about Eshei being gay and the sexual activeness and this creates a wrong thought process when mainland Indians are reading it. When they already have stereotyped the NE girls, reading such a sentence becomes a justification point that, even a Bengali ...

Lively Words

I got the chance to see this book in Facebook, when one of my friends share in his page.

Being a Manipuri,I would give a big THUMPS-UP to a guy who has the gut and tempo to share his experiences with the mainstreams Indians who many of them dont know where Manipur is.

Initially,Being a Manipuri myself I was shocked to learn there are many things I dont know about Manipur but the Author knows,it was a kind of going back to my roots and remembering those ''PHUNGA WORRIES" which means Stories n...
