In The City Of Gold And Silver is the untold story of an unsung heroine. Begum Hazrat Mahal played a pivotal role in the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

    Summary Of The Book

Kenizé Mourad uses her decades of investigative experience as a political journalist to trace and recreate the story a truly remarkable Begum. Hazrat Mahal, the wife of the Nawab of Awadh, rose from a humble background to become a fierce leader in the War of 1857. Her picture dotes numerous history textbooks, alongside those of the mustachioed Nana Sahib and the mounted Rani of Jhansi. However, not much is known about the personal life of this humble queen who took charge of Awadh after her husband, Wajid Ali Shah, was exiled to Calcutta.

In The City Of Gold And Silver is essentially a biography of the Begum, who has been aptly called as the soul of the First War of Independence by British historians. Sold by her parents at a young age, she was a courtesan who later became the Begum of Awadh, Hazrat Mahal lived a selfless life and stood up against the tyranny of the British Empire. Sadly, she was betrayed by the ones she considered her own. After resisting the British for about a year, and continuing the fight for another year after the fall of Lucknow, the Begum fled to Nepal where she lived the remainder of her life in asylum.

Kenizé brings out a life of Hazrat Mahal little known to the world. Misunderstood by her own son, torn between the love of her husband and her illicit lover, and finally betrayed by her own people, In The City Of Gold And Silver is a captivating story of a great Queen, a courageous leader, and a selfless mother and lover.
