    Nike Tracksuits - Stay Comfortable and Sporty 


    A tracksuit consists of 2 parts ; trousers and a jacket which comes with a front zipper. It was originally used as sportswear by athletes who used them to wear over their competition clothing. The earliest use of synthetic fibre, was in the tracksuit. 

    In the 60s, with the famous “space-age” technology, tracksuits were created. The early foundations for tracksuits were made by combining synthetic fibres. The period in which tracksuits started blending in with fashion was in the 70s. They became a non-athletic staple in the 70s. As the interest in personal fitness increased, tracksuits became the go-to gear for recreational athletes. Mountain climbing was a major fad in the 70s and brands like Patagonia innovated with fabrics that could handle outdoor activities. 

    Suburban dance studios were filled with people in colourful tracksuits. The burgeoning hip-hop scene led to the growth of break dancing which allowed dancers to wear tracksuits. These tracksuits were thin, breathable, and did not restrict movement. The tracksuits of the 70s were also bright and colourful.    

    Tracksuits were a part and parcel of popular culture. Bruce Lee wore a red tracksuit in the cult drama Longstreet, before he wore the famous yellow one in the movie Game of Death in 1978.    

    The tracksuit is a ready-made and comfortable attire which has become a factor in the personal style of many famous people.   

    Adidas models from that era prove that tracksuits weren’t what we think they are. The 70s ushered in a more tailored silhouette for tracksuits and very soon the tracksuits found a cozy spot at homes. Tracksuits became mainstream as the fitness craze gripped the 80s. Popular culture and fitness together increased the popularity of the humble tracksuit. Newly developed synthetic fabrics like Gore-tex and Sympatex made the tracksuit even more practical thus ensuring that the person who wore it was comfortable during athletic activity and not just while exercising.  

    By the 90s, the tracksuit became both an on-field staple as well as a hip-hop icon. While the earlier decades focused on a slimmer fit, the later renditions were cut with a relaxed silhouette which was perfect for pre and post-game attire apart from lounging around. 

    Interestingly, around this time, tracksuits were adopted by a more nefarious demographic: organised crime. The loose-fitting, elastic waisted sporting gear was soft and irresistible for many mobsters. In the year 2001, Wes Anderson’s movie The Royal Tenebaums featured Ben Stiller’s dad, an overprotective father in tracks. 

    Since the world of sportswear and fashion collided, major brands like Gucci and Armani are reimagining the athletic classic in various ways. Though designers have started creating tracksuits, they are still something that the common man can afford and wear at home and outside.
