The second edition of the book Contemporary Essays is hereby presented to the readers. Lately, UPSC has introduced certain changes in the essay paper of Civil Services Exam. Among these, two important changes need attention.
1. In place of one, now the aspirants have to write two essays, one each from the two sections with four given options. This change has been made without any prior information to the aspirants. Earlier I anticipated such a possibility and it came out to be correct. This guess was based on very simple reasoning-while essay paper required one essay to be written in the General Studies (GS) papers the number of questions were twenty. The number might go up any year aimed at testing the canvas of the aspirants on a variety of areas.
2. The number of essays in the form of statements and quotations has increased in the past few Such essays are more challenging in comparison to years. the essays based on socio-economic, technological or environmental issues. Generally, students find it difficult to write more than two hundred words on such topics. Students need to be imaginative through touch with various areas other than the syllabus of the GS or optional subjects.
I have received several mails of compliments and advices from the readers on the first edition of the book. I have incorporated their good advices in this new edition. Hereby, I am briefly sharing the modifications in this edition- • This edition has a total of 40 essays-in comparison to 29 in the first
edition.
• Majority of the essays of the first edition has been dropped and new and contemporary essays are included. Few of the old essays have been modi- fied and made relevant to the changing times through required updates and revisions. In a sense, the whole book has been developed afresh with a new orientation.
Like the previous edition, this book has been developed with 'area approach' rather than the 'topic' approach. The essays have been selected on the basis of present trends and dynamism
of our time.
The book has two parts. The first part has tried to address the contempo- rary issues of relevance, touching diverse areas-social, economic, political, technological and environmental. The second part contains a new kind of essays. It deals with few selected essays based on quotations, and statements of philosophical nature. These essays are selected because of their relevance to current time.
