Bets of Historical Fiction

Discovering Kiran Nagarkar was like being handed the privilege of witnessing a superhero in action. Cuckold was the first book I read of his and I can safely say that I have more than just satisfied.
Nagarkar is a master storyteller. This book, set in the 1500s, is an amusing and extremely gripping narration of the kind of society and atmosphere that prevailed back in the 16th century. The prose is rich and though provoking and so colorful that you feel like you can almost smell the aromas of...

An absolute pageturner!

Just finished reading Cuckold by Kiran Nagarkar. It's been ages that I read any of historical fictions, but this one was an absolute page turner. The book is complex, thought provoking and absolutely brilliant. It has 600 plus pages and I was completely enchanted by the charm of Nagarkar's language, lucid story telling, weaving philosophical threads in between seamlessly. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Historical masterpiece

I generally judge Indian authors differently from Western authors and give them more leeway. This book shook my perceptions on Indian writing and my biggest joy was that this was written by an Indian with literary flair.

This is one of the best books I have read in the recent past and like some earlier reviewers mentioned, I found it sad towards the end as I didn't want it to end.

The book was an extremely well-written historical novel portraying the memoirs of the Prince of Chittor and the...

A must, must, must read

Cuckold was recommended by a friend who spoke highly of the book. I would second his opinion here. I usually avoid books with historical background as i found them boring. Cuckold is everything but boring. Such a well written book. Certainly one of the best books i've read in the recent past.

The history, the culture, malevolent ambitions, malicious politics outside and inside the palace, the rajpooti aan, baan and shaan is vividly depicted. The narration and story telling is gripping. It wa...

Just okay

This is the first historical fiction book I have read on Rajasthan. A fictionalised biography of Maharaj Kumar of whom little is known except that he was the son of the famous Rana Sangha of Mewar and the husband of Meerabai . Nagarkar has carried out a lot of research into Rajput history of those times and he sets his story against the backdrop of real events. The descriptions bring you to India in 1600. The writing is smart, fun and captivating. The author has chosen such a topic for his no...

Must Read

Beautiful story telling, fast paced, drama, sex, politics, literally everything that a book needs to get your motor running. You can relate to the thought process in the prince's mind and the end will just leave you devastated. You'd really wish there was more. Its been some time since I can connect emotionally with a fictional character. Just read it and you wont regret it. You have my word :)
