  • Description
Basharat Peer was a teenager when the separatist movement exploded in Kashmir in 1989. Over the following years countless young men, seduced by the romance of the militant, fuelled by feelings of injustice, crossed over the Line of Control to train in Pakistani army camps. Peer was sent off to boarding school in Aligarh to keep out of trouble. He finished college and became a journalist in Delhi. But Kashmir—angrier, more violent, more hopeless—was never far away. In 2003, the young journalist left his job and returned to his homeland to search out the stories and the people which had haunted him. In Curfewed Night he draws a harrowing portrait of Kashmir and its people. Here are stories of a young man’s initiation into a Pakistani training camp; a mother who watches her son forced to hold an exploding bomb; a poet who finds religion when his entire family is killed. Of politicians living in refurbished torture chambers and former militants dreaming of discotheques; of idyllic villages rigged with landmines, temples which have become army bunkers, and ancient sufi shrines decapitated in bomb blasts. And here is finally the old story of the return home—and the discovery that there may not be any redemption in it. Lyrical, spare, gutwrenching and intimate, Curfewed Night is a stunning book and an unforgettable portrait of Kashmir in war.

    Kashmir from a Kashmiri

I purchased the book with no inkling of the content inside it. I was just attracted to the fact that it was a book on Kashmir written by a Kashmiri.

The book really opens your eyes. I was born in the 80's and I was never aware of the exact reasons for the beginning of the armed conflict in Kashmir...Its not a historical treatise....it just shows how little we know about Kashmir and the struggles of its natives....

Kudos to the author for the brilliant book and thank you for sharing the plig...

    Thought provoking

Its difficult to describe how good and how important a book Curfewed Night is. Most Indians think they have a fair understanding of the conflict in Kashmir and to be honest, I too was one of them. However Basharat Peer's excellent book made me realise how little I knew about what was going on in one of the most beautiful states in our country.

Basharat had done a very good job in piecing together the different pieces that make up the Kashmir puzzle and the amount of research that he has don...

Must read before a trip to Kashmir!

What a brilliant read before my trip to Gulmarg. Its a must read if you are going to engage in long conversations with locals to understand where they are coming from. Some parts quite literally made my stomach turn and some parts brought a smile to the face. All in all, a great book on understanding the turmoil and agitation that is Kashmir.

    Striking truth

This book is first of its kind related to Kashmir. And what adds to its worth is that is written by Basharat Peer, born and grown up in Kashmir. The nice thing a about the book is that it has been craftily divided into chapters and the writing very lucid.

I feel hurt after reading the book

Indian educational system doesn't tell you to think from the other angle. It always forces you to follow which has been taught.

But if you are not from that school of thought like me, you would start thinking differently towards Kashmir and the issue.

I hope the Kashmiris.. who are still in valley sighting hope, Pandits who migrated to Jammu and Delhi after brutal killings and Muslims who left the state short of opportunities for youngsters... will get justice..

I want to see properous Kas...
