Wonderful
Ramachandra Guhu is undoubtedly the most prolific writer of our times, when it comes down to the subject of Modern India or even Modern Asia. If not for Guha, there probably isn't any history of post independent India

Have not read the book yet. As a regular reader of Guha - columns in different dailies and magazines and all of his books - this is going to be my next pick for reading for sure. Even by the looks it is so graceful and elegant. With "Guha" string attached it is going to be a sure page-turner from cover to cover. Will be reviewed soon and separately.

Value-for-money
For a reader of contempory Indian literature, this book is like a Bollywood flick which has awesome first half but looses little sheen after interval(2nd half of the book) but makes splendid comeback towards the climax.

The book would be much better to read if you take prior note of the point that Guha is a die hard Congress supporter.
One just needs to apply his critique in context of all parties and governments which he has generally directed towards BJP.
But ofcourse he is a great writer and this book is another example of that.

Just wow!
This is another excellent book coming from Ramachandra Guha. First 8 chapters are about politics and society, while later 8 are about ideologies and intellectuals. There are essays on people like Benedict Anderson, Dharmanand Kosambi, Andre Beteille and UR Ananthamurthy.
