excellent read rich with emotions

the context is set within the per-partition days and so one would be able to understand the status and position of women during those times. the author beautifully captures the emotions, sentiments of the protagonist Viru . as you read through the book you are introduced to various incidents that gives a hint about the social set up during those times and how feminine values, sentiments and decisions are closely shaped by the society.

overall a very good read and nice reading experience.

The discrimination faced by Indian women

Its a story of Virmati, the daughter who chose to go against the tradition with the flashes of 2nd world war & the Indo-Pak partition.. There are some good insights about Indian traditions/conventions, a very well researched book which covers India before partition..

Its about the exploitation of Virmati by the professor, I felt that whatever she did was influenced by the professor and she was confused throughout.. She was just used by the professor to get rid of the emptiness in his life..

Different Point Of View

If Virmati was a strong woman she wouldnt have been played the way she was by her lover and then the husband. She knew what she wanted and she sacrificed so much to get it but in the end she again became a prisoner .. The daughter, Ida was another story who tried to be different for the parents but still did what she wanted!
I would love to read about Ida, Virmati was strong in her times but not strong enough to be independent inspite of her education and struggles.

Virmati is portrayed as a strong woman

This is a fascinating story which has been written depicting three generations. The central theme is that of woman and her marriage issues of Punjabi family. The protagonist Virmati fells in love with the professor who is married. This professor marries her and encourages her for the further studies. The battle of her life is symbolic with the battle of independence. Though this novel is set in the background of partition, its not a political novel but it is to be read with the feministic per...
