Refreshing Read

Unlike many biased and simplistic renditions of the Mahabharata, the Difficulty of Being Good is a refreshing examination of the moral and ethical issues dealt with in the epic with commendable poise. This book, as the author says, is an account of his quest for understanding “dharma” through one of the greatest literary works known to mankind – the Mahabharata.

Though the chapter on envy stands out as superficial and even childish at a point, the rest of the book is engaging and thought pr...

A wow expirience !!

A book whose foundation lays in the epic Mahabharata. An awesome soul touching book that prompts readers to think and make their own version of Right Vs. wrong. I liked the way author has put down many different contradicting views on Dharma and given the space to reader to create and link his thinking to the context.

Gurcharan Das, I was a fan of your writing style and knowledge way back after reading India Unbounded, this book has just added one more adjective which could describe you Vers...

A thought-provoking book that I have come back to once again

I picked up this book via Flipkart more than a year ago and today, I finished reading it for the second time. It is as thought-provoking and interesting as ever, and full of the intrigue and gravity that I experienced a while ago. Old ideas come back into my head, as their revisions circle them and ask to be evaluated in light of my experiences. And this is why books like this ought to be written more often.

Short form essay-type writing on the Mahabharata is best suited to the exploration o...

Exactly what the title says!

My father suggested I read this book as I'd been on a "Mahabharata" rampage. I was told that this is a book about Yudhisthiras struggle between his principles and his dharma. Its written in a very interesting manner with each chapter focusing on one characteristic of a major player in the Mahabharata. It has "real time" examples which help you relate to the topic being discussed and also eventually lead you to ask important questions like what is true dharma? what if our dharma contradicts ou...

The difficulty of being good

Mahabharat is the ultimate guide of matters of morals and righteousness. It has every shade of human character and situation we all find ourselves. Whenever we are faced with a situation where our internal compass of morals clashes with the choices we have to make, mahabharat will throw up a similar situation and show us the way...
The path of righteousness is embedded with decisions we take siding with right or wrong..
The book is a very good commentary on those aspects.

A must for seeker ...
