Description
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS Even though Calendula Officinalis can tolerate light shade in warmer regions, these plants still prefer full sunlight. The best way to plant Calendulas is in well-prepared garden beds or large containers filled with organic soil. Before planting the seeds, mix well-aged manure or compost with the soil to improve the soil conditions. Maintain a distance of 2.5 to 4 inches of space between the seeds. If you are starting earlier than the standard Calendula planting season, then start your plants indoors under grow lights at least 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. However, it is advisable to directly sow the seeds in the garden after the last frost. Calendula Officinalis seeds germinate within 5 to 15 days. Water the plants regularly throughout the gardening season. Use a liquid bloom fertilizer several times during the growing phase to promote big, beautiful blossoms. Make sure to pinch off the spent flowers regularly to extend the blooming period. Adding mulch to the soil is also a good idea to prevent the growth of weeds, conserving moisture and help keep the roots cool. GROWING REQUIREMENTS PESTS Calendula does not attaract much pests but can attaract some bees and wind pollinators due to its bright color. SOIL Ideally plant in loamy soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 6.1 and 6.5 as Calendula Gitana likes to be in mildly acidic soil SPOT Place in a spot that receives either full sun or partial sunlight. TEMPERATURE The temperature should be moderate between 25-35°C WATERING Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. HOW TO HARVEST Start harvesting your Calendula plant as soon as the first flush of flowers is in full bloom. The more you harvest, the more flowers each plant will put out. After the first cutting, you can probably return to harvest more every 3 days or so. The ideal time to harvest is in the morning, before it gets warm, but after the dew dries.
