Tomato can be grown on a wide range of soils from sandy to heavy clay. However, well-drained, sandy or red loam soils rich in organic matter with a pH range of 6.0-7.0 are considered as ideal. Tomato is a warm season crop. The best fruit colour and quality is obtained at a temperature range of 21-24°C.

Sowing should be done thinly in lines spaced at 10-15 cm distance. Seeds are sown at a depth of 2-3 cm and covered with a fine layer of soil followed by light watering by water can. The beds should then be covered with dry straw or grass or sugarcane leaves to maintain required temperature and moisture.

Plant your tomatoes in full sun where they can receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Without adequate sunlight, you'll have fewer, smaller, and slower-to-ripen tomatoes. If your garden falls a bit short on sun exposure, choose varieties that bear smaller fruits, like cherry tomatoes.

Each plant can produce up to 8 to 10 pounds of fruit. The Tomato plant can grow up to 9 feet tall with soft and hairy stems. It has 5-9 leaflets and the leaves can be 4 to 24 inches long. The flowers on the tomato plant are small, yellow and have five pointed lobes on the corolla.
