Description
This book is divided into four parts. Part I presents the introduction of network elements (Chapter 1), fundamental of concepts of DC networks (Chapter 2), Standard network theorems as applicable to DC (Chapter 3) and elementary knowledge of magnetism, electromagnetism and magnetic circuits (Chapter 4). We have also been careful in this part to include over 150 numerical examples to bridge the gap between the formal development of the subject and the problems encountered later on by the students in the subjects of circuits and systems, Analog Electronics etc. Part II is devoted to the analysis of network which are energized with sine-wave voltages or currents. Preliminary knowledge of other non-sinusoidal waveforms are also included in Chapter 5 which focusses on all kinds of series AC circuits and parallel AC circuits. Series and parallel resonance concepts have been discussed in Chapter 6. The various derivations and examples presented in the text include enough of the detailed steps so that the entire procedure can be followed by the student. Complex algebra has been sufficiently dealt to facilitate the solution of over 200 problems in ac circuits. Part III includes a very important component of electrical science viz. Measuring Instruments, the knowledge of which is essential for all undergraduate students. It deals primarily with the measurement of DC and AC voltage, current, Power and energy (Chapter 7) and those of frequency and phase using CRO (Chapter 8). Part IV of the book deals with electrical machines. It is virtually impossible to have a good grasp of machines without a sound knowledge of magnetism, electromagnetism and magnetic circuits. It was difficult to decide whether to incorporate this topic in Part I or here. It is therefore, suggested that chapter 4 be read before going through the subsequent Chapters of Part IV. The last three chapter deals with single phase transformers (Chapter 9), DC machines (Chapter 10) and induction motors (Chapter 11). Theory establishes the foundation of the principle of operation of electrical machines and numerical provides clarity, depth and insight. An important adjunct to mastering this topic are the exercises included at the end of the chapters. These exercises are relatively straight forward applications of the material immediately preceding them. It is intended that all of the exercises be completed as an integrated part of the text material.
