    Description
In a one-bedroom-hall-kitchen in Mahim Bombay, Imelda Mendes Em to her children holds her family in thrall with her flamboyance, her compelling imagination, her unspoken love, her sometimes cruel candour. Through this, her husband, to whom she was once buttercup, her son and daughter learn to cope with her mania and her frequent wish to die.

A searing, and at times darkly funny, study of mental illness, Jerry Pintos first novel is also a deeply moving story about love and family relationships.

The title is opaque at first glance. It acquires meaning only after one has gone through the book.

A delightful portrait of a middleclass Christian family comprising of parents and their two growing up children, the son being the narrator. At the core is the mentally afflicted mother who has episodes of lucidity alternating with depression and self-destructive tendencies. In her lucid moments she bristles with tongue-in-cheek humour and is uninhibited in her talk about sex to her barely out of teens daughter.
Plot is minimal, like Kafka's Trial and Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. The main...

    A beautiful book

Most often, I avoid books by Indian authors because they tend to be too clichéd or very melodramatic. Em and the big hoom pleasantly surprised me. The book was touching and deeply moving. Mr. Pinto beautifully anneals emotions from the first to the last page of this book. I liked the book so much that I have already gifted it to 7 people. A must read. And, it explores so many contestations that we take for granted as given in society

Captivating, touching and a heartfelt novel.

Every once in a while a book comes out that touches you so profoundly, that you remain silent for a very long time after turning the last page of the book. This is one of those. This small and delicately written story of a mentally ill mother's relationship with her kids and her husband, speaks more than its pages reveal. Whats left unsaid, is equally heart wrenching. Jerry Pinto has really hit the nail with this story, his first. Not many could have finished it without having to cope with te...

    Different & Touching!!

I 'd like to make the following comments for other readers:
    1. For those who have just started reading novels, please don't go for it. This book is for those who have read a few books and of varying themes. Not for beginners
    2. Don't rush with the story. Go slow. Visualise each and every chapter as it might happen in front of your eyes.
    3. If you have finished the book and didn't feel great about the story go back and read the book again. Go slower this time.

Not a conventional kind of book ...

    Well deserved literary award

This book rightfully deserved the hindu literary award this year.Just finished the book last night. I'm still reeling under its influence. Jerry Pinto takes you on a roller coaster emotional ride. I'm still not able to believe that it's a work of fiction. It involves the reader so much that you empathise with the characters. Unlike books about people with mental illness that are either too self indulgent or self piteous this one's straight from the heart of the protagonist's son and believe m...

    Excellent

It really is profoundly moving as the cover itself says it. The writing of the suthor is just, just simply phenomenal! If you at all have any second thoughts about buying this gem of a book, then you really shouldn't. I can assure you it will not disappoint you to the least.
