Eminent Historians: Their Technology, Their Line, Their Fraud by Arun Shourie, offers an authoritative exposé on the NCERT controversy. The author attacks Marxist historiography in India and showcases how historians represent facts to suit their own agenda. Eminent Historians examines why the greatest names in historiography do this and why the Government goes out of its way to support them.
Summary of the Book
Indian history is dotted with events such as Mahmud of Ghazni's invasion and Aurangazeb's massacre of Hindus. Yet why is it that school children do not learn much of these stories and focus on the trade that Mahmud brought to India, a consequence that he never intended? Why is it that Aurangzeb is showcased as a tolerant emperor when he ordered the beheading of several Hindu scholars? Why does the Indian Government allow this falsified view to permeate the very schools and colleges that are supposed to advance the study of history? Muslim rule is not to be criticized, the immoral destruction of temples in the name of the advancement of Islam is never to be discussed. These orders were put forth by a circular issued by the West Bengal government in 1989 and have dictated what school children must learn. Mr. Shourie tells the readers that this Marxist method of whitewashing history is a historiographic sin and that its only result is a blinded view of reality. Criticizing eminent historians of the day, he questions their world view and asks why is that a Soviet work on Indian history is more truthful and objective than several of our own.
