Description

Environmental Studies is designed to meet the UGC guidelines for a compulsory course on Environmental Studies for undergraduate students of all disciplines. Assuming very little background in mathematics or science, it gives a balanced presentation of the major issues and concerns related to the environment.

The book discusses the major environmental problems we face today: runaway growth, imperiled ecosystems, disappearing forests, endangered species, dwindling natural resources, dangerous toxic wastes, green laws, and other such issues. It illustrates various problems, solutions, successes, and failures using more than 100 real-life case studies from India and elsewhere. Written in a student-friendly manner, the text is enriched with a large number of illustrations.

Very lucid and concise..

About Book: It covers all the major environmental topics but in a very concise form. Topics are written in Question and Answer formats, easy to grasp. A lot of examples given which makes it a delight to read.

Cons (only from a civil services preparation perspective) : It gives only a basic understanding of the topics does not go into deep (which is needed for some topics now days). updated till only 2010-11.

Summary: for a basic understanding of environment, just go for it !!

Exceptionally Lucid and Engaging!

I had my doubts going for this book as I thought it would be other run of the mill books which only cater to questions asked in UPSC, without really bringing in conceptual clarity.
I found this book to be really refreshing as well as a great source for clearing the basics.
I would recommend this book to anyone who considers Environment and Ecology section of UPSC to be one's Achilles heel.
