The primary objective of the fourth edition of Essentials of Econometrics is to provide a user-friendly introduction to econometric theory and techniques. This text provides a simple and straightforward introduction to econometrics for the beginner. The book is designed to help students understand econometric techniques through extensive examples, careful explanations, and a wide variety of problem material. In each of the editions, I have tried to incorporate major developments in the field in an intuitive and informative way without resort to matrix algebra, calculus, or statistics beyond the introductory level. The fourth edition continues that tradition.

Salient Features

• New text organization: In order to streamline topics and jump right into information about linear regression techniques, we have moved the background statistics material from the second through fifth chapters into the appendix. This allows for easy reference to more introductory material for those who need it without disturbing the main content of the text.
• Several new examples have been added: Practically all the data used in the illustrative examples in the previous edition have been updated. In several chapters, the authors have included extended concluding examples that illustrate the various points made in the text.
• Concrete computer printouts: Concrete computer printouts of several examples are included in the book. Most of these results are based on EVIEWS (version 6) and STATA (version 10), and MINITAB (version 15).
• New diagrams and data-based exercises: Several new diagrams, graphs and data-based exercises are included in various chapters.
• Different use of data: Small-sized data are included in the book, but large sample data are posted on the book's web site, thereby minimizing the size of the text. The web site will also publish all the data used in the book.
• Little algebra or calculus is used: The authors believe econometrics can be taught to the beginner in an intuitive manner without a heavy dose of matrix algebra or calculus.
• Problem solving approach: The authors problem-solving approach is evident in the 300 end of chapter questions and problems. The Solutions Manual has detailed solutions to all questions and problems. In Appendix F the author shows the outputs of EVIEWS, EXCEL, MINITAB, and STATE, using a common data set. All data sets included in the chapters are located on the book's web site.
• Methodology of econometrics: Chapter 1 has a section on methodology of econometrics emphasizing early that one should check for model adequacy before using the estimated model for hypothesis testing and for forecasting.
• User-friendly approach: Essentials of Econometrics retains its user-friendly approach to the major topics in econometrics. The discussion is technically focused but readable with current research and data presented in a clear format. Anyone with a basic understanding of introductory statistics and college level mathematics will be able to understand the topics discussed in the text.
• Appendices: The inherently technical material still remains in the appendices of the textbook. This lessens the rigor of the textbook to allow students a more intuitive understanding of the material.
