Introducing the Collins Modern Classics, a series featuring some of the most significant books of recent times, books that shed light on the human experience - classics which will endure for generations to come. 'Maths is one of the purest forms of thought, and to outsiders mathematicians may seem almost otherworldly' In 1963, schoolboy Andrew Wiles stumbled across the world's greatest mathematical problem: Fermat's Last Theorem. Unsolved for over 300 years, he dreamed of cracking it. Combining thrilling storytelling with a fascinating history of scientific discovery, Simon Singh uncovers how an Englishman, after years of secret toil, finally solved mathematics' most challenging problem. Fermat's Last Theorem is remarkable story of human endeavour, obsession and intellectual brilliance, sealing its reputation as a classic of popular science writing. 'To read it is to realise that there is a world of beauty and intellectual challenge that is denied to 99.9 per cent of us who are not high-level mathematicians' The Times

    Top class stuff !!

Have read it earlier few years back on recommendation of my German colleague. Bought it last year to keep in collection and to read it again.

The book takes you through history of Mathematics and some very interesting anecdotes related to it. Even if you have just a slight inclination for the subject, you will enjoy it. Does not get big on formulas and other technicalities, keeping it simple for anyone to understand.

Learnt some really good things from it, including some very interesting p...

    An amazing journey.

It had been some time since I read a book (4 years). At last I decided to give up my inertia and given my inclination towards mathematics, started with this one. Also it was about Fermat's last theorem, something which I could relate myself to and always thought of finding more about it when I was in school but never got a chance.
This book was an amazing journey through the history of mathematics. It started from Babylonians to Greeks, Pythagoras, Euler, Turing, Yukata and then to Andrew Wil...

The Best book for a quick history of mathematics!

This is the best book that I have read for a quick history of Mathematics... Very dramatic. Although the main story is about the storyof Andrew Wiles who solves the Fermats Last Theorem, I think the setting is brilliant with the history of mathematics and the drama that changed the course of history and the story of many brilliant mathematicians!
