Summary of the Book

This book is the definitive biography of one of the former chiefs of the Indian Army, Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw. Also called Sam Bahadur, he served with the British Indian Army in World War II and led the Indian Army to victory several times against Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 that led to the liberation of Bangladesh in December 1971. It reveals how he grew up in Punjab and and schooled at Sherwood College (Nainital), taking up the entrance examination for the Indian Army in rebellion against his father's refusal to let him study medicine at London. His career, which lasted four decades, from the British era and World War II, to the three wars against Pakistan and China after India's independence in 1947, reveals the stern disciplinarian for what he was and shows how he had an acumen for planning and administration. He also planned the strike at Jammu & Kashmir in 1947–48. The Padma Bhushan awardee helped the country through many battles, and this book tries to bring him to light so that readers can learn how he has helped our country.

About the Authors

Behram M. Panthaki is a former Indian Army Brigadier who has served India on many battles. Currently the Human Resources Director at Kingsbury, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC, that runs K-l 2 day school for children with learning difficulties, he is an ordained Zoroastrian priest and has also written: several works on Zoroastrianism.

Zenobia Panthaki is an Indian writer and the wife of Brigadier Panthaki.

Brigadier Panthanki knew Sam Manekshaw personally from his time in the army and has drawn from his own experiences towards portraying the former Field Marshal in this book.
